February 1991 — The News Argus Page 13 GREEK CORNER Show Dispels Rumors, Myths BY MICHAELL PARKER GREEK EDITOR The popular "Student Talk," hosted by Guy Parks, was held recently in the lecture hall of the Communications Building. The topic was Greekdom: Myth and Rumor. All eight organizations of the national Pan- Hellenic Ccfuncil were represented, as well as the newly formed Kappa Theta Chi Service Fraternity. The show broke some of the myths, rumors, and stereotypes of Greekdom. One main issue that appeared frequently during the show was the new membership intake process. The majority of the Greeks felt that "no pledging" would affect the brotherhood or sisterhood of the organization by the division of members who pledged prior to the new pledge ruling, and those who are inducted by the new intake process. Tegran Fraites, member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., simply stated that "the pledge process shouldn't affect the unity of the organization...these are new times and sometimes changes are needed." "It's hard to understand some things when you are on the outside looking in," said Jeanie Barrett of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.. This comment was made in reference to people (nongreeks) understanding Greekdom. For example, is it Christian or Christ-like to pledge? The Greek panelist made sure that the audience was not mislead. Greeks, as far as sororities and fraternities are concerned, do not worship any gods, such as their plots, letters, or paraphernalia. Greek organizations were founded on Christian principles and values. The Greek letters they wear simply represent the name of their organizatioa The plots are symbols for their organizations and a place for social gatherings. The paraphernalia worn by Greeks are like any other item of clothing representing an organization like a football jacket or a band jacket classifying your musical section like "Brass Monkey-Fall 1988" or "Stone Funk-1990." Nevertheless, if pledging weakens your Christianity, then your faith was not su-ong to begin with. One Greek stated, "I was a Christian before I pledged and I am still one. I worship no god and no sorority. I worship the only God, God Almighty." Greeks made the distinction between "hazing" and "pledging." Hazing is any mental or physical abuse incurred while on line, or during the pledging process. Pledging is the learning process where history is learned, discipline is taught, and unity is enforced. Many nongreeks mistake the two to go hand-in-hand. Each organization admitted it is against any type of hazing, and that there are laws enforcing no hazing; however, individuals of these organizations nationwide have committed the crime of hazing individuals. WSSU Greeks broke some of the myths and rumors of Greekdom at Student Talk, but some of the rituals, ceremonies, and infonmation will remain secretive. Some Greeks said, "It will be secretive until you make the commitment to join us...we're a family, and we do not tell our family business."
