February 1991 The News Argus Page 5' CAMPUS Mayor Martha Wood Is Featured in WSNC By Glynis Whitted Staff Writer A new public affairs radio program has hit the air waves of WSNC FM 90.5. The program has sparked student and community interest and involvement The new program is "Dateline: Winston-Salem," a program that is broadcast the third Wednesday of each month at 10:00 am, and the fourth Thursday of each month at 2:30 pm. The host of the program is Glynis A. Whitted. The special featured guest of each edition is Honorable Martha S. Wood, Mayor of Winston-Salem. The purpose of this program is to inform and educate listeners on what is going on in their local city government and how they, as citizens, can become involved. "Dateline: Winston-Salem" originated under the direction of Dr. Brian C. Blount, producer of the program, and WSNC-FM faculty advisor. Blount attended a function where Mayor Wood was in attendance, and according to Blount, that is when the idea clicked for a program to bring local government and WSNC together. "Dateline:Winston-Salem provides a communication link to the community and its government," stated Blount. Even though this is a new concept and approach to get people involved in local government, it has taken to the air waves in a positive manner. "I wanted it to be something students would respond and relate to," said the host of the 'Dateline: Winston-Salem" provides a unique opportunity for the students at W.S.S.U. to hear, first-hand, what the Beaufort Bally Mayor Martha Wood (left) and Glynis Whitted (right) program host, in the announcing studios of WSNC-FM radio station. Each month Dateline Winston-Salem features the Mayor or her representative. program, Whitted a senior mass communications major from Hillsborough, North Carolina. "This is an opportunity for me to combine my interest in politics and exercise my communication skills," said Whitted. Lori McElrath, a Junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, felt that mayor is doing for the city. "Dateline: Winston-Salem" is just one of the many projects that Mayor Wood supports and is involved in at Winston- Salem State University. In the past, the Mayor and The Board of Aldermen have especially supported the Nursing Program at W.S.S.U. She feels that it is an excellent idea to have such a good rapport with students, faculty and staff at such a prestigious institution of higher learning. When asked how she felt that students and citizens could be more involved in the formulation of policies and the implementation decisions, her response was, "People should actively participate in one of the many Boards of Commissions that perform advisory functions to the Board of Aldermen." The boards Mayor Wood was referring to, range from the Citizens Budget Committee, to The Recreation Committee. She urged people to tjecome involved and be of help to the Mayor's office and the Board of Aldermen by voicing their opinions. 'Dateline: Winston-Salem" promises to have continued success in reaching citizens and encouraging them to support the activities of their elected officials. This effort could make Winston-Salem the b)est that it can t)e. The opportunity for people to call in and talk with the mayor on the air is in the plan for upcoming editions of "Dateline: Winston-Salem." On occasions that Mayor Wood is unable to be featured, "Dateline:Winston- Salem" will have other guests such as assistants to the Mayor, Ruth Cole- Burcaw and Beth Stafford.
