WSSU is celebrating its 100th year of educating students and serv ing the community. The year long celebration has for its theme "Continuing a 100-year Commitment to Excellence." Miss Louise Smith, former member of WSSU's Board of Trustees, serves as chairperson of this event. According to Smith the centenni al celebration will focus on the uni versity’s past present and future histo ry. It is also hoped that self pride and better feelings about the university will be attained. “I want our students to know their founder, and the hardships he went through to make this school what it is today,” said Smith. During the month of March two centennial activities were presented. The first event was Sisters, a play about the encounter of two strangers who are stranded in an office during a blizzard, was presented by Jomandi Productions, Inc. Members of the Student Government Association and other student volunteers are working with Smith. “This is an advantage because students will have hands on knowl edge about how the university has grown and is growing," she ex plained. The purpose of the centennial celebration is to inflict self pride and provide learning experiences about Winston- Salem State University to its students. Another scheduled centennial event is University Week, April 6- 10th. This week is planned to unite faculty, staff and students in a series of events ranging from talent contests to symposia. Additionally, the Class of 1992 is looking forward to participating in the 100th Commencement on May 2, 1992 at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Menorial Coliseum. Qualifications Ciiange for Spring Elections By Erica Gilbert Staff Writer When Yolanda Motley returned to campus this semester, she had no idea that she would become the new Miss Freshman. At first, this news came as a surprise to her. She was not very excited since the academic year was half over. But recently Motley has stated that she felt good about hav ing the privilege of working with the Freshman class cabinet since they have been very active on cam pus.” Motley was one of the seven new class officers appointed to class posi tions this semester. According to the Winston-Salem State University Student Handbook, an individual who is elected as an of ficer must maintain an average of 2.0 to , remain on the cabinet. Unfortunately not all of the officers were successful in doing so this semester. Special Assistant to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, Dr. Manderline Scales, stated that “this is not the first year that this has hap pened; but this is the largest amount of elected officers who have failed to maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average in recent years.” According to Dr. Scales, the Student Government Association and Student Congress have decided to raise the grade point qualification to a 2.5 for elected officers. Presently, the position of Miss WSSU is the only officer that must maintain a 2.5 GPA. ”I recommend the change of the GPA from a 2.0 to a 2.5 and it will be effective for the April Elections,” said SGA President Jennie Barrett. Additionally, Miss WSSU will have to maintain a 2.8 GPA. Joelle Davis, the Freshman class president and her cabinet welcomes Mia Peterson and Tim Moore along with Motley to its executive board. Ronald Benson-El, the Sophomore class president and his cabinet welcomes Tonya Woods, Aaron Davis and Bill Henry to its ex ecutive board. Likewise, the Class of 1992’s President Luther Johnson and his cab inet welcomes Montina Houston to its executive board.
