The News Argus Page 7 " SPORTS — Sports Crew Is Earning Practical Experience by Tamara Puddy Saff Writer “Since high school, I’ve always been interested in college sports,” said Ron Vample. Vample, a senior Mass Communications major from Lumberton, N.C., is a member of the field crew that broadcast the Ram Football games over WSNC-FM. Earl Brower, “Stu-R” Robinson, Rodney Ellis, and Alan Chavous are also members of the crew. “It takes a great amount of talent to be a sports announcer,” stated Brower, a junior Mass Communications major, from Robbins, N.C. He also stated that a good sports announcer “Must speak clearly, think quickly and be knowledgeable about the sport he is covering. Chavis, a graduate of Saint Augustine’s College, said that he has always been a big sports fan; while Ellis, a junior from Raleigh N. C., said he also loved sports and had been involved in them ever since he was 8-years-old. Whether the games were at home or away, the sport’s crew members always took their positions on the field or in the annoucer’s booth. Although they were not all in the same place, they had to know what the other crew members were thinking. Vample, the play-by-play announ cer, was responsible for relaying the game play-by-play to the listening audience. Ellis and Chavis, the color men, did a slightly different job by painting a picture of exactly what happened during the play. Robinson and Brower worked on the sidelines, where they could get a good view of what was actually happening on the field and talk to the players. Joe Watson, Operations Manager at WSNC-FM, also accompanied the crew when they covered home and away games. “Even though they possess skill, the technique, and experience, I still go out and make sure that everything runs smoothly,” said Watson. Although all of the announcers are Mass Communications majors, Watson feels that anyone who has the talent and shows an interest in announcing could probably work for the station. Prospective announcers must audition for a spot on the sports crew. After auditioning, the announcers are chosen by Watson and Dr. Brian Blount, interim chairman of the Department of Mass Communications. “Right now, my main concern is getting them ready to be able to take a position that pays them to do the job that they are doing for WSNC- FM,” said Watson. So if you did not have the opportunity to hear the crew during football season, be sure to tune in to WSNC-90.5 FM during basketball season. Basketball Rams Face Uncertain Season By Connell Cuthbertson and Nhy Smith Staff Writers The Rams basketball team have only one returning senior off of last years 6-21 team. There are a lot of new faces on the team but the Rams are very optimistic about the new season. The Rams are young but they do not lack spirit and enthusiasm. The Ram team has used their youth for a quick 2-1 start this year. The team’s starting line up includes: number 3 , Guard Patrick Herron; number 12 , Guard Louis Williamson; number 23 , Forward Anthony Simes; number 45 Center Antoine Glover; number 55, Forward Sean McDonald. Herron, Williamson and Simes, who also start, are three of the teams returning players. Rams returning player shooting guard is Louis Williamson, a junior from Yanceyville, NC. The 6’ 1” Williamson played sparingly last year but now he’s a starter. Williamson’s performance speaks for itself his averages are 14.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and managed to dish out 10 assists in three games. Louis says “Sitting last year helped him out tremendously, because after all the watching he now feels ready to contribute to the team.” Williamson feels that “unselfishness is this years team strong point.” Antoine “Bear” Glover, a 6’ 6”, 235 pounds transfer from SW Mississippi Community College, is one of the teams new faces. Originally from Charlotte, he is a junior Business Administrations major, one of the teams three captains and is the leading rebounder for the Rams. Glover contributions so far is 14.3 points, 11.0 rebounds and 90% at the charity stripe. Glover says he’s playing better than expected because he came in at 260 pounds and had a lot of hard work ahead of him but by a couple more games his play should be better. Glover knows that “With all the new faces it will take time for the team to gel but with determination and hard work success will follow.” Fayetteville native Sean McDonald, a freshman “walk-on” who plays in the forward position, understands the game, believes that the team can improve on its skills and can beat anybody in the conference. McDonald says the Coach Gaines system is “like a relationship” where both parties. (coach and player), have to think the same way”. McDonald has bee producing 17 points and 8 rebounds per game. Guard Patrick Herron better known as “Pearl” from Charlotte, is the “magicman” on the court. Herron is a returning starter and this is his sophomore year on the court. He has played with the starting members of the team before the season started and the transition to organized play was not hard for the ‘’Magicman”. Herron has an uncanny ability to get the ball to an open player who can make the shot. Herron may seem modest on the court but he explains his role on the team by saying “our team is like a herd of sheep, I am the sheepherder. I feel like I’m the glue, the one that keeps everyone together and involved”. Football Team Shares Christmas Cheer By Kelley Goodman Staff Writer Well the Christmas season has come once again, and the air is filled with joy and happiness. But what is the real meaning of happiness? The WSSU Football Team and the Coaching Staff recently provided a Christmas Baskets to five Winston- Salem families, whose names were provided by Forsyth County Social Services. The team held a canned food drive here on campus to get the goods. Students, faculty and staff members contributed to the drive. The food drive was organized by Linebacker Coach James Braswell. Braswell felt that this would be a good opportunity for the Ram Football Team to give something back to the community. The baskets were delivered to the families on December 10th by Braswell, the Team Captains, and Running Back Greg Smith. The happiness displayed by the families who received the food was heart warming. It will be an experience not soon to be forgotten by the players. The Ram Football Team and Coaching Staff would like to thank everyone who helped make the canned food drive a successful event. HAPPY hBlidays!
