The News Argus - Page 12 Low Voter Turnout During Election BY RION YOUNG Staff Writer April 6th was election day here Winston Salem State University. Not only were the questions: who would be the new SGA president? , SGA VP?, or Miss WSSU? answered, but also these very serious questions: How many smdents participated?, and why did or didn't students vote? Voting is an important and easy way to express your preference for a candidate or a proposed resoultion. So from this perspective, everyone who is able to vote should cast their ballot on Election Day. Tapuwa Massango, a junior,mass communications major said,"I voted because I feel that it is important for all minortities to get involved in any kind of voting." Derrick "Chicago" Whitehead said he voted because Ziggy's overhead bar, which keeps the cost down at the door, “ he says. You won’t find big, burly bouncers or armed men at the club’s door. Ziggy’s staff is made up of Stevens’ longtime friends and relatives who might need a part time job. Having friends and family working for him creates more of a “family atmosphere” along with a a more trusting one. The people who frequent Ziggy’s range from Wake Forest students to Winston-Salem State students to Winston-Salem locals. Students seem to enjoy Ziggy’s. Yolanda Bryant, 21, a WSSU senior frequents Ziggy’s because “the people in the club seem to be in harmony. There’s no violence and fighting which makes for an he "feels it is essential to vote because it brings students together under a common goal." Tony Wallace, a junior said he voted "to voice my opinion so I will not complain about who was elected." Tiffany Graham a freshman said she didn't know any of the candidates' view points or opionions because she wasn't able to attend the speeches. Graham also stated that the flyers and posters didn't represent any of the candidates' view points, they only presented fancy slogans and cliches. Brian Foster, a junior education major, said he sees no point in voting. He feels that "it's not important and that the past candidates were total dissapontments." While there are students like Foster who didn't believe that the election was important, Nhy Smith, who was a candidate for junior class president, feels that voting is very important. Smith from page 11 enjoyable atmosphere for everyone.” As Ziggy’s second year anniversary (under Stevens’ ownership) approaches, he plans to make anniversary week at Ziggy’s one to remember. Begiiming the 1st of May Ziggy’s features reggae, progressive rock and rocking through the week ending with a classic rock party. Bands coming to Ziggy’s Tavern in May include: Awareness Art Ensemble, May 21; Sex Police, May 8; and Digable Planets, May 28. If you are 18 or older looking for a different type of club Ziggy’s Tavern located at 433 Baity Street is your place. can relate first hand to the disapppointment of students not voting because he loss his race by only one vote. Dr. Scales, executive assistant in Student Affairs and one of the SGA's advisors, can't express to students enough the importance of making their voices heard at WSSU through student elections. "The SGA election is educational and it teaches many students about the voting process," explained Scales. Overall she felt that the voter turnout was ' rather surprising this year since only one person was running for president. However, five young ladies weres running for Miss WSSU. William "C.C." Carter, chairman of the Election Committe, also feels that the the overall election was fair, but he was dissapointed that so many candidates ran unopposed and that some postions were left vacant. By 6 p.m. on April 6th, the election was over and all the questions were answered. Joelle Davis is the new SGA president, Carlos Prevett is SGA vice president, and Tywanki Quick is Miss WSSU. Out of 2,655 students enrolled at WSSU, 2,073 did not vote. That means that only 578 students had any interest in this year's election. What happened to the rest of the student voters?
