The News Argus - Page 5 CAMPUS HAPPENINGS Fashion Column: Hot New Hair Styles BY CHIFFONDA RUITIN Staff Writer Hot new hair styles are making the scene this spring and summer. This month the Fashion Section will feature today’s hottest hair styles and some hair saving tips from two local cosmetologists. Women with long to medium length hair are wearing Updos, French rolls and buns here on campus and along the East Coast. These styles are usually accompanied with sassy flat ironed or spiral curled bangs. Most women like these styles because they require a minimum amount of maintenance. Basically all you need to do is tie your hair up with a silk or satin scarf at night and spray it with spritz or hairspray to keep it in place. Since these hairstyles bring attention to your face, most women are adding fancy, eye catching earrings. For people with shorter hair, scrunches and freeze curls are a big hit. Another Toshia Gibson Scrunches alternative is the short and sassy “Halle Berry” look. Short hair is very versatile. Tomi Richard, owner of ‘'Hair By Tomi," says that her clients, who range in age from 13 to 60, are wearing Updos, bobs. Wraps, Waves and She also said that hairstyles like fashions seem to follow 10 year cycles. Many of the same styles being worn today were worn by women 10 years ago. Women who get their hair styled at Imperial Barber and Beauty Shop on North Liberty Street, are requesting Finger waves and Wraps. “Wraps go well with the bob cut and any length of hair,” explained Annette Connelly, a cometologist at Imperial. Connelly also said that women like the Wrap because it requires low maintenance. Here are some hair tips from Richard and Connelly: *Be careful when using gels on your hair. Gels cause your scalp to itch. Too much use of gels can also cause hair breakage. *When seeking a hair color change, one should go by your skin tone because this will highlight your complexion *When putting longer hair into buns, never use stockings or fake hair because they act just as sponge rollers do and pull your hair out. Instead, tease your hair into place. Manns Is WSSU's SID BY KELLEY GOODMAN Sports Editor How many times have you purchased a program while attending a Winston-Salem State University sporting event? After purchasing the program, did you find the statistics on the Ram players and team written in a format that was easy to read? Well , behind every three point shot made by Lou Williamson or every yard rushed by Richard Huntley, there is someone watching with a very careful eye to make sure that all of the Rams’ statistics are documented. The man behind the numbers here at WSSU is Kevin Manns, the Sports Information Director (SID) for WSSU Athletics. Manns, a Beckley, West Virginia native, is a 1990 graduate of Guilford College with a degree in accounting. Prior to coming to WSSU, he worked in Chicago as a personal representative for Scottie Pippen and Craig Hodges of the Chicago Bulls. Working as an accountant had always been a career goal; but the interest in sports public relations was what propelled him to seek employment in collegiate athletics. Manns works closely with A1 Roseboro, WSSU’s Athletic Director. Mann’s future plans include eventually working on the Division I level of college sports or going back to work in the public relations area of professional sports.
