The News Argus - Page 7 SPORTS Edmonds’ Mom Never Missed A Game BY GLORIA MARTIN Staff Writer For the past two years our football team has had a number one fan who has never missed a game. She has always been there excitingly cheering for our team through the heat, the cold or the rain. Who is this dedicated fan? Her name is Vivian C. Edmonds, the proud mother of Jaime Edmonds, the Rams second string quarterback. “I haven’t missed a game yet. I don’t miss any of their games, “ said Edmonds. November 13, 1993, marked the attendance at her 22nd game. Ever since Jaime has been playing football, his mother was there and now she continues giving him and his teammates the support they need. “We have to give them more support, our children need it. If we don’t give it to them now when they need it, then it’s too late to give it to them later. And that’s my theory, give them all the love you can give them now because the way our world is today, they need it and we are the ones that have to give to them,” said Edmonson . Vivian C. Edmonds and Sylvia McMillian college or university he would attend because he had several scholarship offers Edmonds said that she had no influence in Jaime’s decision as to what “That’s my theory, give them all the love you can give them now because the way our world is today they need it.. . ” and it was up to him to decide where he would attend. Edmonds recalls getting a call at 2 o’clock in the morning from former Coach Pete Richardson saying that he would like to have Jaime and in a quick response to that statement she said, “You got him.” When asked about the Rams coaching program, Edmonds said she likes it because it is all about discipline, dedication and love. “When you bring a coach in who actually attended and graduated from the university itself, that’s terrific. 1 like Coach Blount and 1 think he is really going to do some great things with our football team. Like most things, it lakes time. But the main thing is that he came back to his alma mater.” In closing Edmonds has a message she would like to send to Black college students, especially Rams: “When you graduate from WSSU, come back and contribute something. It makes a big difference.” & Football Review BY THERON DAVIS Staff Writer The Winston Salem State Rams Football team has completed another season, finishing up at 6-4-1, which was a task that many critics and sports writers thought wouldn’t be possible. This football season began with a new head coach, many new players and Ram fans looking forward to another good winning season. Head Coach Kermit Blount is very familiar to many Ram fans. During his football career here at WSSU (1976 - 1980), he earned All-CIAA honors as the Rams quarterback. He received his BS in physical education in 1980. He assumed the head coach position in January after Coach Pete Richardson left to become head football coach at Southern University in Louisiana. Despite all of the negative talk from sports critics and some fans, a very tough eleven straight game schedule without any open dates was tackled by the Rams. Due to NCAA sanctions, the Rams would not be able to participate in any post-season or play-off games this year. The Rams finished third in the CIAA behind Hampton (11-0) and Virginia State (10-1). After beating Johnson C. Smith (23-6), Virginia Union (35-27), and tying with Norfolk State (54-54); the Rams were defeated by Virginia State (48-24) in their last game of the season. The Rams were 5-2-1 in CIAA conference play this season. After this long hard season with its many ups and downs, the Rams were ranked 6th in the final 1993 Onnidan Division II Black College Football pole, and were 14th in the nation for the Sheridan Black College pole. When ask about the season that just ended. Coach Blount simply stated, “Looking back, we came a long way ... Some of the things we did against Va. State are signs of a young team. We’re going to get out and recruit some kids to help out with the players we have coming back next year. We are looking forward to the future.” O O O O coisan^TULanoNs 1993 ALL CXAA and ALL rRESJtnEN TEAn PXCJCS 1st Team iALL #21 Shawn CoCt»in (DB) #30 Niam ?Xoore (DB) #72 3CeDCey doodman (OL) 2nd Team cALL CXtAtA #33 Sl.ichard HuntCey ^tt-Tr£.shnvan Team #21 Shawn CoDvin (DB) #30 JSiam !Moore (DB) #40 DonneCC !McDonaCc£ (LB)
