Decemh’?r 1994 The News Argus Page 8 ENTERTAINMENT Vibes, Beats, and... BY QUEYANA WOODS .VICTOR JACKSON AND VDMCE WOODY Staff Writer Sweet Sable Old Times’ Sake Street Life Finally there is some relief from the carbon-copy girl groups put there. Sweet Sable, of Above the Rim Soundtrack’s “Old Times’ Sake” fame, has released an engaging follow up LP. The second time around for Sable ( her first was a club album that produced the hit “Special” ), Old Times’ Sake’s strengths are its beats and subject matter. Sable won’t do “ anything “ for a man and she doesn’t need to” prove” her womanhood. Highlights include “ Tonight “, “ No More “ Circles Every Inch of U “, “Comments from the Peanut Gallery and a better - left - undone remake of Evelyn Champagne King’s “ Love Come Down “ slow things down. This is definitely on the slammin’ list of hits to get - so get to it - get Sweet Sable. Blackstreet Interscope Records Never have I heard a CD with 20 tracks and actually enjoyed all 20! Teddy Riley, the man who can turn songs into gold and platinum, has now formed a new group. Blackstreet’s self titled debut is definitely one of the best r&b albums to come out this year. New Jack Swing lovers will enjoy the hard funk, hip-hop arrangement by Teddy Riley, their first single “Booticall” is far from what the album is really like. Their funky smooth party jams like, “I Like the Way You Work”, “Gooodlife,” “Physical Thing,” and “You Blow My Mind,” sill surely blow up the charts. Now the best part of this album comes on the second half of this CD where Teddy Riley displays his talents as he showcases the tantalizing ballads. Chauncey Hannibal, and David Hollister show off their vocal skills to Teddy Riley’s smooth arrangement. Songs like “Before 1 Let You Go,” “Joy,” and “Happy Home,” will definitely put you and your love one in the mood. Teddy Riley did some singing, but his vocal skills did not match the skills of Hannibal, and Hollister’s. Music fans will not be disappointed with Blacksu-eet. It is a phat album. Murder was the Case (the soundtrack) Deathrow/Interscope records If you are a lover of the west coast flaver then this soundu-ack will definitely catch your ears. All those who loved the Above the Rim (soundtrack) will absolutely love this because it features MOV E REVIEW BY QUEYANA C. WOODS Staff Writer Jason’s Lyric Jason’s Lyric is a heart-touching film about a young man, Jason. ( Allan Payne ), who is basically his “brother’s keeper” throughout the movie. His brother, Josh, is a troubled man who has been in and out of prison. The story revolves around Jason’s unconditional love of his brother and the trials that he went through for him. Jason finally finds love in Lyric, ( Tyra Pinkney ) of A Different World, a beautiful young women who at first plays hard-to-get, but eventually falls in love with Jason. Drama is the perfect word to describe Jason’s Lyric. It almost reminds you of the last year’s movie hit Menace II Society. Adding spice to the movie are actors such as Eddie Griffin and rap group Naughty By Nature leader, Treach. This is a got-to-go-see type of movie and 1 definitely give it the two thumbs up and a perfect “10”!! some of the same artists with new material. Murder was the case is a soundtrack for an 18 minute movie directed by Dr. Dre , produced by Suge Knight and starring Calvin Broadus a.k.a Snoop Doggy Dog. The movie is based on the song Murder was the Case, thus the name of the soundtrack. Murder was the Case(the soundtrack) features songs by Dogg Pound, Snoop Doggy Dog, Nate Dogg, Jewell, DJ. Quick, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube, newcomer Sam Sneed and a host of others. The g funk llavor is represented to its fullest on this album. If you like to bob your head to the g funk of the west coast you will be totally into this album. It satisfies your hip hop car as well as your R&B car . Those who are into cast coast flavor may be disappointed bccause this album is on a different vibe. People who listen to east coast may require a more creative, less repetitive type of sound. Boyz to Men: II Motown Records The smooth harmony has finally returned!! Boyz to Men is back with a sophomore album that will bring pleasure to your ears. With super producers like Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis as Vv'cll as Babyface and L.A. Reid, they are sure to go double-platinum soon. Boyz to Men also produced their own songs as well. They did a wonderful job by delivering a perfect harmonic sound. You already know about the hit debut single,” I’ll Make Love to You,” but there iire other songs that are destine to be future hii. ' On Bended Knees,” is a powcrlul begging ballet that even the begging king Keith Sweat, can’t touch. Other I'avonie songs include: “Vibin”, “Water Runs Dry,” “I Sit Away,” and “Tryinf; Times”. Boyz to Men made a great return after coming off their multi platinum debut in 1991.
