The News Argus February 1995 Page 2 IIIWS^ARGIIS Jamita Griffin - Editor Traci Tiera King - Managing Editor Dr.Valerie S. Saddler — Advisor True Story of Valentine's Day Have you ever wondered why we celebrate Valentine’s Day? Who was Saint Valentine? Why do we give our girlfriends, boyfriends or loved ones chocolate covered hearts every Feb. 14th ? In the book, Opening of the Seventh Seal: Secret Societies Unmasked by Is a Abd All ah Mu hammad al-Mahdi, the true story of Valentine’s Day is exposed to the public. The book, to my surprise, was first published in 1970. But as an old cliche’ goes, “the best way to hide information from Black people is to pul it in a book, because they (we) will never read it.” This truth has been made self-evident. According to Abd Allah Mu hammad al-Mahdi, Saint Valentine was a Roman Christian martyr of the 3rd Century A.D., who was killed during the reign of Claudius II Gothicus. Claudius II was a strong advocate of homosexuality. As a result, he disapproved of young men marrying young women and made up a law against it. Saint Valentine, according to various accounts, was a Roman priest and bishop of a small province in Rome, who secretly married young couples, thus breaking the laws of the land set by Claudius II. He also believed he was ordained to do these illegal marriages by the so- called angel Cupid (fictional) used to symbolize love. When Claudius II found out about the secret marriages, there was a massive search to find all of those who participated. Once the grooms were found, they were castrated and their hearts were cut out. These same hearts, eventually, were sent to each of their brides in a box. (Sounds Familiar Does It!) Saint Valentine, by the way, was also beaten and later beheaded on Feb. 14. during the his last years of Claudius’ rulership. On the eve of execution , Valentine sent a note to the jailer’s daughter who had befriended him. In it he thanked her for her caring and kindness and signed it, “YOUR VALENTINE.” This is when the pagan practice of exchanging similar notes to special Valentine’s on Feb. 14th began, which later became the legends of the Saints. ISSUES G flnSWERS ARGUS MAILBAG Self Sufficiency Self sufficiency is the only key left to unlock the shackles of the economic downfall Blacks seem to be facing in the 90s. Why have we not learned to invest our monies in our own communities? We have no problem supporting or contributing to the wealth of other establishments, but when will we lake care of home ? Here in Winston-Salem, ihere are several Black owned businesses that could use our support. Special Occasions, TheLower Hemisphere, Umoja, Dudley Products, Discount Records & Tapes and Forsyth Fish, are just a few examples. Until African-Americans understand the power of our buying dollars, we will continue to see our communities vanish right before our eyes. As a student who is attending a Historically Black University, it is important that future Rams realize that a college degree does not guarantee a job. It simply gives you a key to enter the competive job ————— market. Since we are a skillfull, creative and cognitive group of people, we can be more than job takers, we can be job makers. Self sufficiency is the key. Reclaiming our community means redirecting our monies. Redirecting our monies means understanding our finances. Understanding our finances means refocusing / regrouping our energy into developing businesses for the COLUMNIST TraciTiera A. King 21st century. Regrouping ourselves and better understanding Self Sufficiency does not mean anti- white, it simply means pro-black! .... Go back... Support black. Broken Hearts I In life, there are many passions but only one love? Nothing can ! compare to it Ike and Tina Turner? But “What’s Love Got To Do With , It?” i Love can conquer all, O.J. and ' Nicole? But “Loves Going To Get I U.” There is no memory as sweet as ' love, Ms. Lorena BobbitL But “ Thi^ ain’t no ordinary ...love” The unsolved mystery of love i and relationships have left the world tantalized, confused, angry and even i trapped in its mystical, potent, potion ! of passion. But I wonder if any of these “so- called scholarly scientists, whom seem to know everything, can answer the simple yet complex question, “ Where Do Broken Hearts Go?” There were four million cases of domestic violence in the United States last year, according to USA Today. The domestic abuse came in the form of verbal assaults and physical attacks, which resulted into 1,530 deaths of God’s most precious creation, the woman. I was always told never to strike a woman for she is the Mother of the Planet, but some men today, slap women around like the pimps and players they^ imitate and become. And if you, as a woman, allow yourself to become a • punching bag in the name of love then something is wrong. Some say love is a struggle. Others say that love can bear all. But the sweet, intoxicating concoction called love has turned in a bitter sweet poison that lurks many of us like a spooky, , cloud of grief, pestilence unbearable strife. For all the beautiful women who have fallen out of love, don’t relinquish that loving spirit within your godly nature by allowing yourself to suffer from those verbal or physical assaults given by the perpetuators you call your men, lovers, husbands or friends.
