CAMPUS HAPPENINGS
NOISA Informs
WSSU Students

When most people think o fmembers
of the Nation of Islam, they probably
assume they’re a group of bow-tie
wearing, non-pork eating, Elijah
Muhammad loving people who often try
to persuade you to come to meetings with
long winded lectures or to buy a copy of
The Final Call newspaper.
Here at WSSU, the Nation of Islam
Student Association (NOISA) uplifts the
black woman and the role of the black
man. These topics are always discussed
and practiced not only within NOISA,
but within the teachings of the Nation of
Islam itself.
If you’ve ever attended one of their
meetings, you would definitely get a gist
of the magnitude of respect that is given
and expected from the organization’s
members. NOISA ‘s members are
WSSU students and some of them are
members of the Nation of Islam.
The organization’s officers are:
Sister Kathy Johnson - president; Lance
Rucks and Eric Graham, co-vice
presidents; Derrick Davis- secretary and
minister of Information; and Guam X -
spokesperson.
If you are interested in becoming a
member or want information about
NOISA, contact Kathy Johnson or Kathy
Stover in the Student Activities Office or
call 750-3350. NOISA meets every
Tuesday at 7 p.m., on the third floor in
Wilson Hall’s TV room .

director.
Student volunteers with help from
security currently staff and run the
service. “ We have basketball and football
players and students volunteering their
time. I encourage students to take
advantage of the service,” said Harpe.
The volunteer wear safety vests and
carry flashlights. The SGA is currently
working on getting whistles for the
volunteers.

“ Whether I am here or not, in ten
years I envision this program as being
very successful. I really feel the students
that volunteer need to be rewarded. My
goal is to see this program having vans,
golf carts, computers, everything that
other escort services have,” said Harpe.
The Ram Watch can actually make our
campus safer for the students.” If you
feel you need the service of a Ram
Watch volunteer call 750-3206.

Members of the media and the
audience were very impressed when
Joelle Davis, WSSU’s SGA president,
eloquently expressed her feelings about
the surcharge. “What happened to a
Dream Deferred? What happened to an
opportunity given to us? What happens
when there’s not a college or university?
What happens when there are no more
HBCU’s? Ladies and gentlemen, we
have been behind the eight-ball in this
country for as long as we’ve been here
but I thought now in the 90s that we were
here to progress, not regress,” said
Davis, mind to do so,” said Davis.
This surcharge would affect every
student on financial aid, including work
study and loans. Davis feels that with the
state’s increase of tuition, financial aid
would jeopardized for many students
attending HBCUs.
“Over 90 percent of students (at
HBCU’s) use financial aid , the work
study program and the loans,” she said.
As the students left the state’s
capitol building, they came out with a
better understanding of how law works.
Winston-Salem State University’s
SGA along with other North Carolina
Colleges and Universities are going to
start letter campaigns, phonathons and
literature drops in the community to
spread the word about the proposed
surcharge.
