The News Argus April 1995 - Page 4 CAMPUS HAPPENINGS Diggs Gallery Offers ^ Fine Art to Visitors Queyana C. Woods and Victor Jackson Campus Pals Help New Students 3Y ENRICO LEAK Staff Writer There are many features here on the campus of Winston-Salem State University that distinguishes this campus from other HBCU campuses. The one feature that stands out on this university is the Diggs Art Gallery. The Diggs Art Gallery was originated in the Fall of 1990 as a dream of Dr. Cleon F. Thompson, Jr. Mitzi Shoemaker, an art professor who believed that if an university's art program is to be strong there should be a gallery so that the students could actually see the art. The goals or the purpose of the art gallery is to be a part of academic life on campus. The gallery's artwork should reflect black history as well as to explore other cultures in art. The opening of the gallery was to persuade students to actually pursue a career in art and offer internships. BY ENRICO LEAK Staff Writer Have you ever thought about where the beautiful paintings that are hanging around campus originated? BY KEISHA BUTLER STAFF WRITER “Breaking out into a whole new era of service, determination, dedication, motivation and education,” is the message that is proudly displayed on the t-shirts worn by members of The Campus Pals. WSSU’s Campus Pals organization boasts of having a membership of 30+ su-ong. It is designed to help motivate freshman and transfer students mentally, physically, psychologically, socially and spiritually. The “pals” are not only peer mentors, but also liaisons between the freshmanXtransfer students and other organizations on campus. Their motto “For The Student” says it all. This organization has already begun planning for the upcoming 1995-96 academic year. Its mission will consist of “recognizing, respecting and upUfting the students at WSSU to help build a greater university.” Victor Jackson, a senior Mass Communications major from Kannapolis, who is also a member of the organizatioi, made such an impression on his freshman pal that she decided to become a Campus Pal also. Delinda Woods, his pal stated, “Vic and I became such close friends through this organization. I feel that I can go to him and talk about anything that is on my mind.” Woods also feels that every freshman and transfer student should take advantage of their campus pal. “They are really there to help you and motivate you to do well. They offer you the chance to learn from mistakes they made as a freshman.” The 1995-96 Campus Pal spring intake process has already begun and they are looking forward to inducting strong, vivacious and student-oriented people into the organization. “The Campus Pals Organization has always been strong and full of dedicated people. Since I’ve taken on the duties of president, I’ve found the best of what Winston-Salem State University has to offer the students,” said Queyana “Q” Woods, a junior Mass Communications major from Charlotte, who currently serves as president of the organization. “Our programs are designed to help create a bond between the new Rams and us so that they don’t feel alienated when they arrive here. Our job is to make the transition from “their” home to “our” home less difficult.” Campus Pals not only work during the academic school year. They work a few days during the summer as well. During the two summer orientation sessions, June 22-24 and July 6-8, the members of this organization are quite active on campus. “New Rams-to-be” who attend these sessions have a chance to meet their Campus Pals and find out more about the organization and its activities. The Pals are in the process of scheduling a “butter” orientation program for the fall so be prepared for something “real.” Hey Rams!!
