The News Argus April 1995 - Page 6 SPORTS — Softball Team Having A Great Season BY KEISHA BUTLER Staff Writer They are on a RAMPAGE!!!! Who’s on a rampage? Winston-Salem State University’s Women’s Softball Team that’s who!!! The softball team, who opened its season on March 13 against NC A&T State University, is surprising many opponents with their 10-2 record. This opener was an indication of how the rest of the season would look, Pride Died!!! The Lady Rams beat A&T for the first time in six years. This was the beginning of the rampage. They killed A^qie Pricte not once, but twice. • “The girls have in their mind that they can win,” said Head Coach Michael Winbush. “They have cut down on a lot of mistakes and they are working very hard.” Winbush has been head softball coach at Winston-Salem State University for three years and has been coaching the sport for six years. He is also serves as an assistant football coach and coordinator of intramural sports Team newcomers Nekendra Magee and Kelly Albury have already made a significant contribution to the team. “Nakendra has helped out a lot as catcher and pitcher,” stated Winbush. “Albury, I call her my utility player, because she can play anywhere on the field.” Letisha Jones, Bridgette Speaks, Denettra Parker, Kendra Home, Pam Johnson and Diya Wilson are the returning team veterans. “I knew that the quality of our veterans and rookies would take us far,” said Winbush. Sonya Hurt, former player and graduate of WSSU, serves as the team’s assistant coach. She is very enthusiastic about the teams winning efforts. “Everyone can look forward to a winning season,” said Hurt. “ It’s a great possibility that they can bring home a championship.” Winbush describes Hurt as very competitive and a disciplinarian coach. She played at WSSU between the years of 1984-1987. During this time, the team won two CIAA Championships. Kendra Horne, Denise Taylor and Diya Wilson are the teams graduating seniors. “These young ladies are very competitive and love the game. They will really be missed by the team and by the staff,” said Winbush. The softball team continues to “rock the boat” with the stands full or empty, but support from fellow RAMS and friends would sure make their sailing much smoother. “I would like to see more students come out and support the girls,” said Winbush.” Lady Rams: A Year In Retrospect BY WnUAM HORTON AND KEISHA BLTTLER Suff Writers It is hard to believe that another basketball season has come and gone. Even though the the season wasn’t what the Lady Rams of Winston Salem State was hewing for, there was some positive outcomes and the future looks bright fw Lady Rams basketball. One of the few bright spots for the Lady Rams was the selection of sophomore guard Chellia Nelson to the all CIAA team. In addition to receiving the Newcomer of The Year award. Nelson was also the team leader in scoring (20 ppg.), rebounding(9 rpg), and assists(4 per game). With Nelson returning next season. Head Coach Debra Clark is already looking forward to the future. “I think next season the players will have a better understanding of my goals, expectations, and requirements as basketball players and iodividuals,” she said. Clark feels the team progressed as the season went on, but there is still room for improvement. “Our record doesn’t indicate how well we did”, Clark said. “It was a big transition for everyone, with the girls getting used to me and vice versa.” Improvement won’t be easy with the Coach Debra Clark loss of three seniors who made major contributions to the team. Point guard Natasha Buford was responsible for ball distribution and being the coach on the floor. “I’m sad it’s over”, Buford exclaimed. “Even though I won’t be playing after graduation. I’d still like to be involved in basketball.” “Maybe I’ll coach a YMCA team”, Buford said. Kendra Home, an all CIAA player last year, was the team’s seccmd leading scorer at 17 ppg. “I truly enjoyed the sport, but this past season was the worst of my career”. Home stated. Reserve post player Sharon Allen gave some valuable minutes off the Senior Player Natasha Buford bench and provided the Lady Rams with big defensive plays. “I felt we improved, even though our record was like the 93- 94 season under coach Conley,” Allen said. The Lady RAMS are to be commended on a hard fought season. “We would like to thank the student body and all the other fans for their support throughout the season, and we encourage you to continue to support us in the future, Clark said. The Lady Rams are definitely an exciting team to watch and are sure to be on the winning track very soon.
