College Students
Protect Your
Personal Possessions
Registering for classes, buying books
and moving away from home are typical
worries for college students. Today,
students must also add theft to their list of
worries. Theft is the number one crime
on college campuses, according to the
Insurance Information Institute (III).
If you fall victim to burglary, having
adequate insurance can lessen the blow.
For students who live in dorms, their
personal possessions are insured under
their parents homeowners policy. New
coeds should consult their parent’s
insurance agent to guarantee that
expensive computers, televisions and
stereos are fully covered.
Upperclassmen who move off
campus need to purchase a renters
insurance policy to cover their
belongings.
The 1.1.1., offers the following
advice to guard against theft on college
campuses:
* Always lock your doors.
* Leave expensive jewelry at home.
*Engrave electronic items.
* Don't leave personal items
attended on campus.

Schexnider Named New
WSSU Chancellor
THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH
CAROLINA NEWS RELEASE
Dr. Alvin Schexnider,
who currently serves as vice
provost for undergraduate
studies and associate vice
president for academic affairs
at Virginia Commonwealth
University in Richmond, Va.,
has been named the new
chancellor of Winston-Salem
State University.
A native of Lake Charles,
La., Schexnider, 50, graduated
from Grambling State
University with a bachelor's
degree in political science; a
master's and doctoral degrees
in political science from
Northwestern University.
He has accumulated more
than 20 years of experience as
a faculty member and
academic administrator in a
number of public and private
institutions of higher
education.
Schexnider has also
served as an associate and
assistant vice president for
academic affairs and associate
dean during his tenure at
VCU. Dr. Schexnider has
been active in professional
and civic affairs which include
several years of service on the
Slate Board of Education for
the Commonwealth of
Virginia. He has authored
many scholarly publications
on urban, racial and military
issues.
Schexnider is married to
the former Virginia Reeves of
Salem, Va., a school
psychologist for the Richmond
Public Schools. They have

Huntley Misses Breaking 1989 All-Time
College Rusher’s Record

Although the Winston-
Salem State Rams defeated the
Virginia State Trojans 20 -14,
Richard Huntley fell 35 yards
short of becoming college
football's all-time leading
rusher on November IL
Huntley finished the gan>e
with 175 yards (he needed 210
yards) on 37 carries and
scored two touchdowns,
helping the Rams defeat
Virginia State, the CIAA
champions.
Many Rams fans came to
the game, which was played
during steady rain,
anticipating seeing history
being made.
"I knew Huntley was
going to set a new record,"
Mid Luther Mason. "I came
to the game in the last quarter
because I just knew WSSU
and Winston-Salem were
going to be getting plenty of
press. A North Carolina
hisuxically black college was
going to make the "big time' in
the sports world."
During the third and
fourth quarters of the game, it
was quite obvious to the rain
soaked fans that braved the
inclement weather that history
may not be made that day.
Contrary to popular
belief, history was made.
Huntley gained 218'yards, but
he lost 43 yards, including 25
yards on two plays when he
played the role of the team's
punter. There were two bad
snaps and he had to chase the
ball.
"They played as if they
didn't want him to break the
record. The score should have
been 40 - 0 and he should
have broken the record," said
8-year-old Ashante' Dunn,
who was attending the game
with her father and uncle.
