Burke Singers: New
Campus Singing Group
BY KENYETTA RICHMOND

Watch out Sweet Honey and The
Rock, because the Burke Singers are
following closely in your footsteps.
The Burke Singers, the newest
singing sensation on campus, are four
young ladies who are members of the
University Choir. Temeka McCain, a
senior Elementary Education major;
Cassaundra McCloud, a senior Music
Education major; Sonya Melton , a
junior English Education major; and
Calsine Pitt, a senior Business
Administration major are the group’s
members. D’Walla Simmons Burke,
director of the University Choir, is also
the director and founder of this group.
The Burke Singers were founded in
March 1995.
“ I saw the need to add a sense of
variety, emotion and a sense of political
awareness to the choral program here at
Winston-Salem State University and the
City of Winston- Salem,” said Burke.
The group’s members say being a
part of this group has brought about a
bond of sisterhood among them.
“The Burke Singers has given me
the opportunity to travel and become
exposed to different people in and around
our community,” said McCloud.
“Singing in this group has given us
the opportunity to learn inspirational
songs from different cultures,” said
Melton.
If you have not heard the Burke
Singers, you have definitely missed an
entertaining as well as educational
experience. Their next performance will
be at the University Choir’s Christmas
Concert on December 2 and 3.
Rachelle Ferrell
Appears On Campus
STAFF REPORT
Jazz, Rhythm and Blues recording
artist Rachelle Ferrell displayed her
talent earlier this month at a performance
on campus.
Using facial expressions and her
amazing vocal range, she performed
tunes from her debut album “Rachelle
Ferrell” and her jazz album “First
Instrument.” Some of the most
memorable tunes include “Peace On
Earth,” “Welcome to my Love,” and
“Extensions.”
%
Ferrell asked the audience to close
their eyes and pretend Will Downing
was there singing with her when she sang
her hit, “Nothing Has Ever Felt Like
This.”
She also performed a great rendition
of “Amazing Grace.”
She ended her performance with
“With Open Arms.” This excellent
concert was brought to the WSSU
faculty, staff, student body and Winston-
Salem community by the WSSU Lyceum
Committee.
