NEWS BRIEFS Alexander Will Head SGA WSSU Receives Title III Grant Press Release Winston-Salem State University has received a Title III Grant in the amount of $1^88,036 for 1996-97 from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant totals approximately $30,000 nr.ore than the 1995 gift. According to Perry Leazer, the Title III coordinator, a large portion of 'he grant will be used for automation. The automation will be in the area of the university's mainframe computer network for administrative and academic use. Another main area for the funds is to be used towards accreditation activities of some of the academic majors, with emphasis on the Business and Economics Division. Under Title III, the federal government has $100 million this year to distribute nationwide among 107 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Ill Q i z BY QUEYANA C WOODS Editor On April 3, 1996, Winston-Salem State University students elected Veronica Alexander Student Government Association (SGA) president Alexander, a junior molecular biology from Fayetteville, has been involved in student government since she was a freshman. During her freshman and sophomore years, she served as administrative assistant for former SGA President Joelle Davis. Last spring, she was elected SGA Vice-President. “In the years working with with the SGA, people tend to slack off during second semester,” said Alexander. “People should continue to work with the SGA the entire year and should actively participate in other cabinet member’s activities throughout the year. Each member should be working to help the others excel., " she said. Her administrative term begins on June 1,1996. She is looking forward to working closely with Chancellor Alvin Schexnider and having the SGA office in the new Cleon and Edwina Thompson Student Center. The new student center is scheduled to open August 1, 1996. “1 know that Chancellor Schexnider is student oriented and concerned about what students want. I hope that he will work closely with the SGA as well as members of the student body,” said Alexander. Alexander is a Chancellor Scholarship recipient, a member the Positive Student Awareness Association (PSAA), Project Strengthen and she also works closely with the Nation of Islam Student Association (NOISA). “I am very excited about next year because not only will 1 be the SGA President, but I’ll be a senior and 1 hope to make it WSSU’s best year ever,” she said. Congratulations Veronica Jeffrey & Joy Secretary of Army Will Speak At Commencement NEWS RELEASE WSSU Public Affairs Office Togo D. West, Jr., secretary of the Army and a native of Winston-Salem, will deliver the commencement address at the 104th annual commencement exercises on May, II, 1996. As Secretary of the Army, West oversees a more than $600 billion budget, more than 500,000 soldiers, 279,000 reservists and 410,000 national guardsmen. Before his appointment as Army Secretary, he was the top man in Washington for Northrop Corp., a defense contractor. In 1975, West was associate deputy attorney general, the Navy's chief counsel from 1977 to 1979 and the Pentagon's chief counsel in 1980. He was named to his current post in November 1993. West received his bachelors of science and J.D. degrees from Howard University, in Washington, D.C. Among his volunteer affiliations are positions with the Kennedy Center, the Folger Shakespeare Theater and the N. C. School of the Arts. He is married to Gail Berry West. He mother, Katherine West, resides here in Winston-Salem.
