May 1996 The News Argus - Page 13 CAMPUS HAPPENING Mozik Takes Show On The Road BY QUEYANA C. WOODS Editor WSSU's Mozik Modeling Troupe, participated in the Second Annual Collegiate Fashion Competition at Raleigh’s Enloe High School last month. Seven university’s modeling troupes participated in the fashion competition. Winston-Salem State University (Mozik), UNC-Chapel Hill (Concept of Colors), NC A&T (Mo-Del Unique, Inc.), North Carolina Central University (Bon Virant Fashion Society), Stillman College (Sophistication Unlimited), Shaw University (Raw Essence Fashion Entourage), and North Carolina State University (Black Finesse) were the troupes that participated. Each group had 25 minutes to put on their show- stopping performances. The groups were all judged on creativity, dramatization, technique, usage of space, group unity, crowd response, walking technique and timing. The highest number of points that a troupe could receive was 100. Thirty Mozik members, including three members from the Association of Rhythmic Talent (ART), presentation had a “James Bond” theme. CaSondra Seagress and Tara Farrar, independent black designers out of Raleigh, sponsored Mozik and came up with the James Bond theme. Former Mozik model Avis Bond, who is now a member of the Department of English and Foreign Languages’ faculty, served as their M.C. “I was ecstatic and very honored that I was asked to M.C. for this competent organization. They are such an independent organization. They’re young, but disciplined and dedicated because they have an inner desire to be excellent and suave,” said Bond. The fashion competition was sponsored by Hair Cafe, CasWear, Peter’s African Fashion Collection, Stepping Out, Plaza Beauty, Jackson’s Graphics, Mr. Freeze Records, Focus One, Inc., and Ambiance Productions and Entertainment Company. DeWitt Ellis, one of the newest Mozik members, said, “this was my first time modeling. It’s very exciting at show time because everyone is cheering for you. Being on stage makes me feel good because it gives me a chance to show off my dance moves while showing my modeling skills also.” Lynetta Burson, another model, said, “I’ve modeled before but not in this caliber competition. I got to see the other groups’ styles and it was definitely an interesting experience.” “Mozik had a very strong chance of winning because we came up with some strong ideas. This competition compared to others that I’ve been in is different Mozik Models "hamming " for the cameras because it’s the first black competition that I’ve ever performed in, it’s great! The trouf)e has developed the right mentality to compete on the professional level,” said Alfron Patterson, a veteran Mozik model. When the judges returned their votes,Shaw University, won first place; N. C. A & T University won second place; and Stillman College, from Alabama, came in third place. Although Mozik didn’t place in this year’s fashion competition Bond feels the troupe’s performance was outstanding. “Mozik is the epitome of leadership. These students need to be recognized because they are the ones that accentuate Ram pride; they work against an apathetic image but aren’t recognized like they should be. They should have use of vans for iransportation, hotels if they need to stay overnight, be excused from classcs and fed like members of other campus organizations. Why, because they are representing the university,” she said. Math Major Receives Undergraduate Research Honor BY DOUGINS CLARK AND AMY PHIPPS Staff Writers Douglas M. Carter, Jr., a graduating senior major m applied mathematics, has won an honor for excellence in undergraduate research for his work directed and supported by Dr. Sudhakar Pandit. The project titled “ A Linear variation of parameter formula and comparative theorems for three dimension hyperbolic problems” took two semesters to complete and the results will be published in the next issue of the refereed journal, “Dynamic Systems and Applications. “ For those who are not familiar with professional journals, a referee journal is a publication which publishes scientific and mathematical papers after first having them reviewal by a group of professional experts. This insures the legitimacy and quality of the work to be published. “I was inspired by Dr. Pandit because he taught me to believe that 1 could handle the work,“ said Carter. The project has given Carter the experience to prepare him for applied mathematics on a graduate level. Later he hopes to tcach as a mathematics professor. Dr. Merdis J. McCarter, the chairperson of the Mathematics department, said that Dr. Pandit will represent Winston-Salem Stale University and the Mathematics Department at the Second World Congress of Nonlinear Analysts in Athens, Greece July 10 - 17, 1996. “ At this conference Dr. Pandit will highlight the research work that Carter completed under his direction," said McCarter. He will incorporate Carter’s work into a presentation along with his own research. According to Dr. McCarter, Carter’s work is a great example of academic excellcnce because the problems that he researched had to be expanded over time to use adequate and corrcct scientific computations with their mathematical models. Dr. Pandit explained that expertise with “ partial differential equations, “ laymen’s terminology tor Carter’s research, is a strong base for all types of jobs in the applied mathematics area. Over his 12 years of teaching at WSSU, Dr. Pandii has seen many promising students. Two others performed significant research in applied mathematics, but did not complete enough research in one semester to publish before graduating. Carter, on the other hand, spent two scmcsicrs researching piu-tial differential equations before his w ork was accepted for publication.
