NEWS BRIEFS Million Man March Revisited The one year anniversary of the Washington Million Man March will locally be celebrated on October 19, at noon in the Corpening Plaza. The Local Organizing Committee of the Million Man March, the North Carolina Black Repertory Company and Fathers and Friends Inc., will sponsor the march. The March will leave the Winston Mutual Building, 1225 E. 5th Street and go downtown to the Corpening Plaza. At the plaza, several speakers, entertainers, exhibitors and vendors will join in the festivities. Thompson Student Services Building To Be Dedicated Friday BY AMY PHIPPS Ediior ‘The new student services building will enable us to serve our students better,” said Dr. Alvin J. Schexnider, WSSU’s chancellor, at a ‘VIP Tour’ of the new Cleon F. Thompson Student Services Building. The tour was held for members of the media, city alderman, state representatives, board of trustees members and community business people. Undoubtedly, this 114,000 square foot facility will do just that by encompassing nine administrative offices, the Student Government Association’s (SGA) offices, a student dining room, a faculty/staff dining room and other student services’ offices all in one location. The SGA office suite, located on the first floor, opposite the bookstore, includes office space for primary officers, a reception area, and a meeting room. Students will no longer have to trek across campus to visit the post office, bookstore or the Financial Aid office. Instead, they will find these and many other offices housed in this new $16 million building. In addition to the campus bookstore, a foodcourt and leisure and study space will be available in the building. A television room equipped with four television viewing areas to accommodate students’ viewing preferences will be located on the lower level of the building. The game room, which will provide an area for student recreation and entertainment, includes a billiards room, table tennis room, and electronic game room. Students will also be able to check out game room equipment. For special faculty, student and community-based activities, a spacious multipurpose room, which seats 450 and contains movable partitions, is located on the second floor. The room may be divided into three separate rooms. The fabric covered walls not only enhance acoustics, but attractiveness as well. The room’s amenities include an automated movie screen, projection room, and stereo speakers. This room is ideal for receptions, small convocations, movies and meetings. It will be available on a reservations-only basis. Employees in the Admissions, Billing & Receivables, Enrollment Management and Services, Financial Aid, Registrar, Career Planning and Placement, Counseling, Residence Life, Student Activities and Student Affairs offices will enjoy taking breaks in the Employee Lounge. This room is equipped witli comfortable chairs and tables, a sink, storage cabinets, a microwave oven and large refrigerator. Nine conference rooms are located throughout the building. These rooms will accommodate groups of 16, while two of the rooms have sliding partitions that will scat up to 32 people. These areas are accessible to food services and therefore, may be used for small catered events. Each room is equipped with a podium, built-in bulletin board and telephone. These rooms must be reserved through the Student Activities Office. The dedication of the Cleon F. Thompson Student Services Center will be held on October 4, as part of the Homecoming festivities. Some of the offices will have relocated to its new spaces by dedication time. Holmes Will Be Crowned Miss WSSU BY LOUQUENDER ROBINSON Staff Writer “There is no victory without Joy,” were the words that helped catapult Joy Holmes to the title of Miss WSSU 1996- 1997. Holmes, a senior accounting major, will assume her duties on Oct. 2, 1996. The Goldsboro native, has been a member of the junior varsity cheerleaders and is currently a member of Scarlet Lace and the Mozik Modehng Troupe. When asked what prompted her to run for the coveted title of Miss WSSU, Holmes said, she and a former Miss WSSU were both business majors and "I had the opportunity to see what the position of Miss WSSU involved on a very personal level. ” She added, “I was very involved on campus and I felt becoming Miss WSSU was another way to become involved with campus activities.” Throughout the year, she plans to implement projects to increase student involvement on campus and in the community. She also plans to bring children from the Winston-Salem community to campus to start a program like “a big brother/big sister” program. “WSSU students will have the opportunity to be mentors to children even if they have limited time or no transportation,” said Holmes. ‘There Joy Holmes will be no room for excuses from the WSSU students since the community children will be brought to them.”
