Michelle Andrea Mobley, was crowned Miss Black and Gold 1996 on Sept. 18 in WSSU’s Dillard Auditorium. Na’Kecha Pellam was second runner-up and Towanda McDougal was first runner -up. As Miss Black and Gold, Mobley will go on to compete in the regionals which will consist of Alpha Phi Alpha pageant winners from other colleges in the south. Joseph T. Briscoe, a Beta Iota member, said “The fraternity brothers will remain acquainted with the winner of the pageant as well as the other contestants. We are like a family.” Eight contestants competed for the Miss Black and Gold title. Among them were Rasheda Mayse, Towanda McDougal, Wendy Covington, Ne’Kecha Pellam, Denisha Potts, Latisha Bell, and Keshia Dunn. BY MARQUIS CARTER Slaff Writer Michelle Andrea Mobley Contestants were judged on business attire, talent, swim wear, formal wear and a question/answer session. The judges included: Mrs. D’Walla Simmons Burke, Daniel Lovett, Lorenzo Meachum, Edgar Zimmerman, Doraldine Adams and Phyllis Smith. Thomas Beard, Beta Iota Chapter Brother and brother D’Angelo Lewis provided entertainment during intermission. Miss Black and Gold 1995- 96 Dencen Dixon, also gave her farewell speech and took her final walk during the intermission. After months of planning, planning and more planning, the union between CAT-TV and Winston-Salem State University is finally becoming a reality. Although the union is still in its beginning stages, the result will be more community involvement and exposure forWSSU students. CAT-TV is a public-access television production studio and station (Cable Channel 6 ), which originated from a partnership between Summit Cable and local Winston-Salem residents. The idea behind CAT-TV is to provide Winston-Salem residents with some measure of control over what airs on local cable television. Accordingly, residents and now WSSU students also have an opportunity to produce and air television shows themselves. Previously, WSSU's Department of Mass Communications has been primarily focusing on the campus’ flourishing radio station WSNC 90.5. After suggestions from students, the Tareeq Rasheed: Mr. Ram 1996-97 BY SHARONDA WILCOX AND DANIELLE PROPHETE Slaff Writers “An Evening of Rendezvous: A Night of Ram Elegance," was an appropriate title for the 22nd annual Mr. Ram Pageant held on Sept. 19. The event was definitely a crowd pleaser as six very distinguished and talented young men competed for the title of Mr. Ram. Tristan Turner, Anthony Mitchell, Stovell Wade, Da’Shawn Luckey, Tareeq Rasheed and Sean Squire were the contestants. The evening started as Joe Duncan, Mr. Ram ‘95-’96, said his farewells and graced the audience with a performance of Luther Vandross’ “A House Is Not a Home,” which received a standing ovation. Contestants were judged on Career Wear (dressed for success in their business suits). Creative Wear (stylish and daring), Talent, Formal Wear and Self- Expression. During the talent acts each contestant showed special abilities, some of which included singing, dramatic interpretation and poetry recital. Although there was only one winner, all of the contestants performed with true winning talent. However, two particular Rams were lucky enough to make stronger impressions than other contestants. Tristan Turner, a senior, was named first runner-up and Stovell Wade, also a senior, placed as second runner-up. It took a panel of eight judges 40 minutes to decide which gentleman would be the new Mr. Ram. After much anticipation the judges announced that department gave the green light to pursue a union with CAT-TV. It also hopes thal through trial and error the additional local media exposure will benefit the university, its programs and departments. Auditions have already been held for on- air talent for one particular project. By establishing a working relationship between WSSU and CAT- TV, students will be able to produce and help in video projects with non-students. The department's chairman. Dr. Brian Blount said this union will “provide invaluable technical experience and networking opportunities for students.” Whatever the outcome of this venture, it is without a doubt a step in the right direction for the Mass Communications Department. Not only does CAT-TV provide the opportunity for future broadcast journalists to polish their skills first-hand, it paves the way for more innovative ideas which before might have seemed like only dreams. sophomore Art and English major, Tareeq Rasheed, had been chosen, "Mr. Ram ‘96-’97." The decision was not a surprise because of Rasheed's strong presentation and the participation of the supporting dancers in an original choreographed poem titled, ‘The Devil’s Tears.” Rasheed’s talent presentation and his response during the question and answer portion of the competition, apparently put him at the top of the judges' list. “I was very surprised that I won because there was a lot of other talent and creativity on the stage,” said Rasheed. He already has plans for his role as the new Mr. Ram. “What I would like to do is bring the campus together and have more unity and school pride.” HEY RAMS!!! ROCK THE VOTE!!!
