The News Argus October 1996- Page 5 CAMPUS HAPPENINGS Evans, Fearington Lead Class of 1997 BY MONICA ALEXANDER Staff Writer Two women lead WSSU's Class of 1997. Carita Evans and Valerie Fearringlon are the women who have been chosen by their peers to lead the Senior class. Evans, a Charlotte native and an elementary education major, is president of the class. Fearrington , a Mebane native and a political science major, is vice-president of the class. They are assisted by the senior class board members who include: Keisha Gibson, recording secretary; Katrina Murrell, corresponding secretary; Tonja Smith, treasurer, Taura Hatney, parliamentarian; and Paulette Amore, chaplain. Evans and Fearrington have planned educational programs to help seniors to prepare for graduate school or to become members of the workforce. They also are planning activities they will help the seniors to become involved in community service projects. “Students must realize that our commitment to the University does not end with graduation," said Fearrington. "WSSU's motto states 'Enter to Learn Depart to Serve', so the real community service comes when you share the knowledge that you gained from this institution with a fellow brother or sister.” Evans would like seniors to become more involved in class activities by joining a committee or giving input on things they would like to see done. Members of the Class of 1997 can begin being involved by participating in Carita Evans Valerie Fearrington Senior Class Day, Oct. 3, 1996. A Hoop-It-Up Contest will be held throughout the day and a Pajama Jam is planned for that night. The music will be provided by 102 JAMZ. Seniors who have not picked up their class cards should see Evans or Gibson. Providing the unique Christmas gift for the significant other in your life will be the focal point for the Christmas in Carolina auction. Live and silent bidding will allow guests to purchase North Carolina products and entertainment opportunities. An extra effort is being made to encourage WSSU alumni to attend and donate items to the auction. A WSSU graduate has already agreed to donate a case of African dressing, (her response to French, Italian and Russian dressings). Other WSSU graduates will be asked to donate art. The best North Carolina authors and artists have been asked to donate autographed books and prints. Several wonderful gifts have already been donated to the group. Some of them include: a handmade queen sized quill, tickets for Charlotte Hornets basketball game, dinner gift certificates for two to several of Winston-Salem’s most popular restaurants, a weekend get-away for two at the Hawthorne In, and AAA of Winston-Salem has donated a premium membership or renewal for one year. All of these items will go to the highest bidder. Local businessman Tom Trollinger and his wife, Kay, have agreed to host this fund-raising event. Additionally, Claudette Weston, Coach Clarence Gaines and former assistant basketball coach and alumnus Tim Grant are working to help solicit other special North Carolina products.
