SMART
Program
College undergraduates interested
in biomedical careers can experience
scientific research as a summer job.
The Graduate School of Baylor
College of Medicine in Houston
sponsors a 10-week Summer Medical
and Research Training Program
(SMART). SMART participants from
throughout the U.S. get first-hand
experience in laboratory settings.
Participants also attend daily research
seminars and other educational
activities.
Acceptance is highly competitive.
More than 700 applicants typically vie
for 80 positions.

Pulitzer Prize Nominee Speaks To
Mass Communications Majors

A two-time nominee for the Pulitzer
Prize, was the featured speaker at
Winston-Salem State University's Joseph
N. Patterson Lecture and Assembly Series
on November 13.
Dr. Chuck Slone, a former senior
editor and columnist at the Philadelphia
Daily News, a former While House
correspondent and the former editor of
three African-American newspapers,
spent the day .wi^i aspiring WSSU mass,,
communicators.
In his opening comments during the
Patterson Lecture Assembly, Stone said
although this was his first visi to WSSU, ii
was a happy reunion. He met Chancellor
Alvin J. Schexnider in 1975 when he
"was a visiting chaired professor at
Syracuse University's Newhouse School
of Communication." He called the
chancellor "an audacious scholar with an
infectious personality."
He grinned as he bopped along to
Aretha Franklin's "Respect," a musical
selection he included to lighten his spccch
and to emphasize his point about
Dr. Chuck Stone and Wendy Covington
respecting others, " a key component of
this nation's multiculturalism."
Slone told members of the audience
that to succecd, all they needed were three
things: a liberal arts education, black
consciousness and excellence.
He said that excellence was
something possess by Phyllis Wheatley,
Nat Turner, Ida B. Wclls-Barneit, Martin
L. King, Rosa Parks, W.E.B. DuBois and
Malcolm X.
Stone reminded the audience that in
four years, ihey will witness a historic
change, the coming of the 21 si century.
He said that students must be ready for
the technological challenges of the century

Coors Donates Scholarship to WSSU
News Release
Coors Brewing Company donated
S5,000 to each of 10 historically black
colleges and universities, whose alumni
represent the country’s best and brightest
contemporary black leaders, in hopes of
fostering the growth of tomorrow’s black
leaders.
The donations were pre.sented at ihe
1996 National Black College Alumni Hall
of Fame Induction Ceremonies, at
Atlanta’s Hyatt Regency Hotel. John
Meadows, Coors’ director of Corporate
Relations presented the checks to Morgan
Slate University, Southern University,
Tennessee State University, Albany State
College, Morehouse College, Lane
College, Winston-Salem Slate University,
Jack.son State University, LcMoyne-Owen
College and Husion-Tillotson University.
The donations are intended to serve
as scholarships for student*; who need
shori-lcnn linanacial assistance for books,
supplies, housing, travel and other
emergency expenses.
The National Black College Alumni
Hall of Fame Foundation was established
to increase public awareness of and
appreciation for the achievements of
historically black colleges and univcrsilies
and their graduates. The Ibundaiioii also
