The News Argus November 1996 Page 11 Trojans Nip Rams, 17 -15 ~ SPORTS Games In Review By Monica Alexander and Louquender Robinson Sports Writers The WSSU Rams came within four seconds of knocking off the defending CIAA Champions, the Virginia State Trojans, on October 19. Jay Sullivan connected on a 36-yard field goal with 49 seconds remaining in the game to win the game for the Trojans. This win, helped the Trojans to remain tied for second place in the Southern Division of the CIAA. Although they lost. Ram fans who attended the game, saw their team outplay the Trojans. Eric Hendley gained 189 yards on 42 carries and scored two touchdowns. The Rams outgained the Trojans 285 yards to 279 yards on offense and held a 256-118 advantage in rushing yards. As in previous games, the missing link, again appeared to be the lack of a “big-play threat.” Golden Bulls Cruise By Rams, 14 - 6 A Homecoming crowd of more than 12,000 Golden Bull fans watched as their team cruised by the Rams 14 - 6 in a CIAA game held at Charlotte’s Memorial Stadium. Although the Rams took a first-quarter lead when quarterback Tremaine Graham hit Damien Owens with a 5-yard pass, they remained scoreless tne rest of the game. In the second quarter, the Bulls took the ball on the Rams’ 41-yard line and went seven plays for a touchdown. Bull quarterback De’Trell Calloway cappcd the play with a 1-yard run. A bad play by the Rams later in the second quarter resulted in a fumble that was recovered by the Bulls on the Rams’ 17-yard line. Later tailback Demetrius Campbell scored on a 6-yard run for a 14-6 lead. The Bulls’ defense held a tight rein on the Rams’ offense during the last two quarters. The Rams’ defense played tough and kept the game close, but the offense never took advantage of the mistakes made by the Bulls. Dunng the last four minutes in the fourth quarter things did look hopeful. The Rams got the ball back for the last time. Travis Pender tried to rally the Rams. He was sacked by Andron Hatchett on a third down. Rams Stop Panthers, 21 - 14 The Ram football team finally gave their fans a reason to cheer, as the offense scored 21 points to defeat the Virginia Union Panthers. True freshman Andre Fane started at quarterback for the injured Tremaine Graham and Travis Pender. Despite having never taking a snap in a college game. Fane was poised and showed leadership as Winston-Salem State posted their best win to date. The Rams started quickly, scoring on their first possession of the night. With the help of a rush by running back Eric Hendley and a penalty against the Panthers, Fane scored his first touchdown in college by scrambling into the end zone. The Rams utilized the running game for the majority of game with great success. Running backs Tyrone Murphy with 106 yards and Eric Hendley rushing for 179 yards each scored a touchdown. Injuries to key players on defense also did not stop the Rams’ continued excellence on on defense, shutting the Panthers out in the first half. Nose guard Jonathan Hood, a true freshman, lead the defense with 10 tackles. Defensive back Shawn Colvin’s two interceptions stopped the momentum of the determined Panthers. Virginia Union continued to play hard and scored 14 points in the second, but the Ram defense stopped all attempts by the Panthers to tie the score. Rams Deck Spartans, 13 - 7 Freshman Quarterback Andre Fane and the Ram did it again not just for the fans; but the senior too! The Rams ended their season with a 4-7 record (3-5 CIAA). The seniors ended their season with a win. The Rams got on the scoreboard early in the game. The Spartan's Lydell Finely fumbled a punt and the Rams recovered. Shawn Thomas attempted a field goal, but a penalty for running into the kicker gave the Rams a first down. Three plays later Fane threw a pass to Tyrone Murphy who ran for a 10-yard touchdown pass. Later in the first quarter, the Rams connected on a 33-yard field goal to make the score, 10-7. The Spartans score a touchdown and point after in the first quarter. Early in the second quarter, Thomas made a 41-yard field goal to give the Rams a 13-7 lead. The Spartans struggled throughout the second quarter; but remained scoreless. The Rams defensive line consisting of LaTori Workman, Jonathan Hood, Jai Moody and Thomas Washmgton kept the Spartan's quarterback Robert Morris busy most of the night. Colvin Named Defensive Back of the Week BY DANIELLE PROPHETE Staff Writer A senior mass communications major, was named the CIAA Defensive Back of the Week for week lO’s football game against Virginia Union. Shawn Colvin, was chosen after he gave a stunning performance during the November 2 game. He had two interceptions, five pass break-ups and six tackles. I was looking forward to receiving it, but I was hoping it would have come earlier in the season,” said Colvin. “But it was good I got it against Virginia Union because it will give me some momentum going into our last game against Norfolk State.” Along with his most recent accomplishment, in 1993 Colvin was named All CIAA and All Rookie Team for five interceptions and one touchdown. He has 14 career interceptions and has been named Defensive MVP three times. Colvin, 21, comes to WSSU from Page High School (Page Pirates) in Greensboro, where he was also a very decorated athlete. His position as wide receiver earned him MVP in the East/West All-Star game in 1992. He also played in the Shrine Bowl, which is considered to be the biggest all-star game for high school football players. In addition »o football honors, Colvin was awarded All Conference Baseball Player in 1991 as pitcher for the Page High School Pirates baseball team. Colvin would like to further his career by playing in the NFL. However, Shawn Colvin he realizes his chances to play in the NFL are not very high.” After graduation, he plans to work in radio. 10 Seniors Say Adieu To Ram Fans BY MONICA ALEXANDER ^ons Editor Ten WSSU Ram Football Players played in their last collegiate game on November 9. The players were: Donnell McDonald, LaTori Workman, Niam Moore, Shawn Colvin, Terry Badger, James Wright, John Robinson, Kelvin Bailey, Randall Carter and Brian Jeter. The fans who braved the cold to see the Rams defeat the Norfolk State Spartans, 13-7, definitely were treated to the game of the season. Good Luck and Congratulation to the seniors!
