November 1996 The News Argus - Page 13 CAMPUS HAPPENINGS NBS Elects 1996-97 Officers BY AMY PHIPPS Editor The Winston-Salem State University Chapter of the National Broadcasting Society (NBS), elected it’s 1996-1997 officers earlier this month. Preslyn Young, was elected president; Monica Alexander, vice- president; Marcus Farrar, secretary; and Wendy SU'ader, treasurer. Young describes NBS as an organization which helps keep Mass Communication students in touch with national mass media issues and stimulates networking with mass media professionals. Students, professionals and businesses can all become members of the organization. NBS provides professional links and skills to develop student careers through national and regional conventions, local meetings with professional guest speakers, field trips and opportunities to practice their broadcasting skills. One such upcoming opportunity is a national production and script-writing competition calling for submission of individual and group production projects. Young also mentioned that AERho will hold several fundraisers between now and the end of the semester. Funds raised support chapter activities, trips to conventions and the NBS’ philanthropic beneficent, the Tourette Syndrome Association. In the 1995-96 basketball season, the Lady Rams ranked second in the CIAA Conference. But this year, they are striving to come in first. With eight returning players, and four new players. Head Coach Debra Clark expects nothing but improvement on last year’s 17 and 11 record. “My main strategy is to stop the other team,” said second-year coachClark. “Let the defense dictate the offense.” The Lady Rams’ top returning player is Chellia “Church” Nelson, who earned a spot on the All-CIAA Team for the second consecutive year. Erica Leggett earned a spot on last year’s All- Rookie Team. Also returning is Senior Kelley Albury. According to Clark, Freshmen L’Tona Samuels, Lamesha Stephens, Sharonda Moore, and Renee Cameron (a second semester transfer from Western Carolina), “have bright futures as Lady Rams.” “1 am very pleased with the progress of my players, ok! and new,” said Clark. The team has been practicing a little over a month, six days a week, for 2 - 2 1/2 hours a day. “If the practices are too long, the players’ attention span would be shortened,” stales Clark. The coaching staff. Coach Clark, and assistant coaches Aronda Frcnzley and John Clark, will be looking for Nikki Blackwell, Wykesha Broadnax, and Holley Griffin to provide floor leadership, scoring, and defense. Later in the season Rachel Hicks will return with Crystal David to provide experience in the post position. “1 feel that Rachel and Wykesha will play a vital role in the inside game,” said Clark. Not only arc the Lady Rams a team on the court, but off the court as well. “1 don’t have to enforce a study hall,” said Clark. “The girls do that on their own. They help each other when needed.” vsssgfm In Italy life revolves ai'ound the kitchen. I'.isl iikr II (l( K-s lu’ii' .11 ifir )li\c (i;ii(k'ii wIhh- ic l(«ikm)’, I* n 'iii|iiisi,i >in .
