From the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 in the afternoon, she sits quietly, hardly noticed, at the receptionist’s desk giving staff and visitor’s a friendly smile and hello as they enter. “She’s more than just a volunteer, she’s part of our family. She keeps us in good spirits,” said Eryca Burch, a WSNC-FM 90.5 staff member. “Since I am a senior. I’ll miss her when I’m gone.” P.R. White, one of the station’s announcers said, “She’s a nice, friendly lady and it’s a privilege to have her working with us.” Who is she? Her name is Annie Sherrill, a native of Winston-Salem, who was raised in Virginia. She lives here with her foster son and said she enjoys working at the radio station. “1 like it, it’s completely different from what 1 was doing. She was also the leader of the senior citizen’s musical group, “The Rhythm Band.” Sherrill’s employment at the radio station was made possible through the Winston-Salem Urban League’s Seniors in Community Service Program, which is funded by the U.S. Dept, of Labor. The program employs senior citizens 55 years and older. The goal of this program is to give seniors the opportunity to gel the skills to go back to the workplace. Employees go through an application process and their previous work experience is what places them in the jobs they receive. Joe Watson, general manager of WSNC 90.5 staled, ”We were very excited to work with the Urban League in acquiring the services of Ms. Sherrill. She’s been a tremendous benefit to the growth of WSNC and all the students love her.” Sherrill has been involved with the Urban League since June 1992, and November 23 will mark her one year anniversary with WSNC-FM 90.5 Happy ^Anniversary!
