The News Argus March 1997 Page 11 FEATURES Student Of The Month: Vanessa Sawyer-Wilson BY VINCH WOODY Staff Writer How many Winston Salem Stale University students can balance a household of six, manage a daycare center, and boast of having a 3.5 GPA? Not manyl The News Argus Student of the Month, Vanessa Sawyer- Wilson, a senior History major does. When asked how she juggled the activities of motherhood , a daycare center manager and being an exceptional student Sawyer-Wilson replied, “My employer works with me on my hours. The daycare 1 work in is small and we want to build it up. With a degree I would be more equipped to do that.” At the daycare center Sawyer-Wilson is responisible for taking care of payroll, fees, job interviews, menus and food plans she also has the task of the daycare stays within state/county guidelines, handling the center’s paperwork including the children’s immunization records, planning field u-ips for the children, janitorial work, and filling in for substitutes. Additionally, Sawyer teaches a kindergarten class. Sawyer-Wilson, who is the mother of five girls; Chondra, Sateria, Jessica, Briana and Kara, who range in age from 9 to 17, first attended college from 1977 - 1981; but due to family obligations she had to leave. Now, 16 years later, Sawyer-Wilson has returned to school to complete her college degree. "I waited until my children were old enough to take care of themselves before 1 came back. My older children are now old enough to look after the young ones,” said Sawyer-Wilson. She has always been concerned about education for herself and her children. “I taught my two smallest children at home for six years before putting them in the public school system,” s he said. After receiving her degree from WSSU, Sawyer-Wilson plans to pursue a master’s degree in educational administration. She feels a graduate degree will provide her with additional knowledge and expertise in the field of child care. The degree would also help her with her future. She plans to own her own daycare and become a daycare consultant. In her spare time Sawyer-Wilson enjoys reading and vacationing with he family whenever she has the time and finances.
