CAMPUS HAPPENINGS O'Kelly Library Now Offers Britannica Online Service BY DAVID FULTON Staff Writer Beginning this semester, O’Kelly Library will now provide another time- saving reference source for WSSU students. Britannica Online makes getting the information you need quick, easy and enjoyable. Students will now spend less time searching for information, more time using the information and will stay ahead on his/her assignments. Britannica Online is available on two computers in the Electronic Center located on the first floor beside the Circulation Desk. The cost of one of the computers was approximately $2,500. Now, there are four computers in the Electronic Center. Britannica Online and WordPerfect are on one set of the computers. The two computers have Internet Web browsing capabilities using both Netscape Microsoft Internet Explorer. The default page is the Yahoo Search, where users can enter search words to get to Internet sites related to their topics. Additionally, subject areas are available for identifying Internet sites within each subjcct area. “ O’Kelly Library is continuing to provide advanced technologies to our users. The Internet access computer can now link you to worldwide information with only a few clicks on a mouse,” said Terry Brandsma, O’Kelly’s automation librarian. The Internet connection is made through equipment that is already installed in the library. The equipment is linked to the North Carolina Information Highway which is part of the Internet. According to Brandsma, the library plans to have three additional computers after upgrading the computer systems. Currently, printing is free to students. Britannica Online is available through any computer on campus that is connected to the Internet. The user should go to http: // ww. eb. com: 180 to begin the search. It is best to use a graphical web browser. Although, text- base web browsers can also access the same information. The Electronic Center is open to all WSSU students and library users. WSSU students seem to be enjoying using the services this facility has to offer. Omar Marks, a WSSU junior says, WSSU students are taking full advantage of the library’s Electronic Center and its many Online services. If so, then The New Generation Campus Ministries (NGM) is the organization for you. “1 feel that NGM is a generation of excellence through God,” said Tyrone Reid, a sophomore secondary education major and president of NGM. “We are a generation on the move and getting a lot accomplished.” NGM consists of several students on campus who come together to fellowship, worship, pray, receive the word of God, and give thanks for His many blessings. “We hold group discussions on how we as college students can apply God’s word to our lives and be successful spiritually and academically as well,” said sophomore Tameka Jackson, hospitality chairperson. On collcge campuses it seems as though the Christian faith is rarely displayed, but in fact, there are several NGM chapters on college campuses throughout the state. In mid-March, WSSU’s NGM chaptcr will be attending a national convention in Atlanta, Ga. At least 10-11 chapters will attend the convention. “It’s really fun being around other Christians and other people with positive attitudes,” said Brenda Lovely, a senior biology major and head of Special Women in Christ. “Being part of NGM has made me grow spiritually and it has taught me how to balance my life by putting God first.” NGM’s meetings are open to Christians as well as the general public. They meet every Thursday at 7:30 P.M., in the conference room on the ground floor of the Anderson Center. SUMMER SCHOOL FOR PEOPLE ON THEIR WAY TO THE TOP.
