The News Argus April 1997 - Page 5 CAMPUS HAPPENINGS Turner Will Hold SGA Vice President Position BY DANIELLE PROPHETE Editor Winston-Salem State University's new Student Government Association's (SGA) Vice President is a member of the Positive Student Awareness Association, the reining Mr. Ram, a sports broadcaster at WSNC-FM, 90.5, was an administrative assistant on the current SGA staff and is a junior, sports management major. "I feel it's a honor to have been elected vice president," said Tristian Turner. "WSSU's SGA accomplished numerous goals this year. I just hope the 1997-1998 SGA Cabinet can use this year as a stepping stone." Not only is Turner very active on campus, he is equally involved in off- campus activities. In Durham, he volunteers with an inner city youth Taylor WSSU in 1994. She was president of the freshman and sophomore classes and Wilson and Atkins Hall; in the marching band for three years; parliamentarian for the North Carolina Black Student Government (NCBSG) and senior vice president for the National Black Student Government (NBSG). Through her many achievements and endeavors, Taylor has warranted many negative comments. Many times she has been called a racist, pro-Black and a militant “I’m not a racist, but I will fight for who I am,” said Taylor. “Why is it when we as Black people stand up for ourselves it’s called racism? But when white people stand up for themselves it’s called human rights?” Does Taylor feel it is healthy to surround herself with nothing but Black things and Black people? Taylor said, “many people realize the most about our history on a collegiate level. So yes it is program and chaperons the youth group, at Cole Mill Road Church of Christ on activities,. Turner feels that WSSU students need to become more involved in and particiipate in campus activities. He hopes that Student Congress will help student to become more involved on campus. "Students like to voice their opinions about problems on campus; but they don't attend the forums sponsored on campus that provide a place for them to vent their opinions," explained Turner. "Having more active participation in the Student Congress will be one of the main things I plan to focus on next year. We need more participation in this organization from students in campus organizations." One of the other complaints WSSU from Page 1 healthy. It is more than healthy. It gives you self-esteem.” This hard working woman is not about games. She is here for a purpose. Sponsoring parlies and “gym jams” is something she will not be doing. “I will be handling the political stuff. SGA will still handle stuff like Homecoming, but that will be strictly for social affairs,” explained Taylor. “I definitely want to make sure I have the confidence of the students, because they are the ones who voted me in,” said Taylor. “I just want them to know as with any complaint or concerns there will be a process to go through to make sure it benefits the majority of the students.” Next year she plans to apply for admission into graduate programs in international relations at Texas Southern or Clark Atlanta. Taylor future plans include becoming a U.S. Ambassador. students have every year for the past several years has been about the quality of the food provided by the food service. The 1997-1998 SGA President and Vice President feel that they will solve this ongoing problem. "President-elect Karen Taylor along with other student leaders have talked about the problem," said Turner. "Our plan is to Keep Shaw Food Services and help establish new dining hall package plans suitable for the students and the administration." Turner is extremely excited about the five males who have elected positions on next year's SGA Cabinet. He feels the students who voted felt more males were needed in student leadership roles on campus. "We need more black males in student leadership roles," he explained. Tristian Turner "Strong male leadership accompanied by strong female leadership - you just can't go wrong."
