The News Argus May 1997 Page 11 FEATURES Pershing Angels Take Flight To WSSU BY TONYA M. ARNOLD Guest Writer The National Society of Pershing Angels (P/A), a military sorority was originally founded at Oklahoma State University by the National Society of Pershing Rifles in 1%2. The original name of the organization was the Coed Affiliates of the Pershing Rifles (CAPERS). On February 9, 1965, 30 women founded the National Society of Pershing Angels at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md. These women who were called CAPERS, founded the organization based on the same principles as the CAPERS, but changed the name in order that their organization could be a separate entity from the Pershing Rifles. Thirty years later, seven ladies, known as “Seven Angels of the Resurrection,” were inducted into the organization to recharter the Pershing Angels on N.C. A&T’s campus. This was the first line in ten years since the organization was disbanded at A&T in 1985. These seven ladies began to rebuild their organization on campus. In 1996 they inducted another member, ‘The Lonesome Dove.” During the 1997 spring semester at North Carolina A&T State University , the Pershing Angels inducted six ladies, “Six Shadows of Vengeance.” These ladies are the third generation of the rechartered line at A&T. These 1997 inductees were important because The Pershing Angels want to expand to local campuses and increase its membership. The 1997 line consisted of one young lady from UNCG, two from A&T, and three from Winston-Salem State University. Conu-ary to popular belief, the P/As do not exclusively consist of members of the Armed Forces. The organization includes graduate members who are doctors, corporate leaders, teachers, and college professors, and business owners. Numerous P/As go on to pledge Greek sororities. However, they never forget the bond of sisterhood that they build with their sisters in the National Society of Pershing Angels. New members inducted into the Pershing Angels here at Winston-Salem State University are: Quinnethier Williams, sophomore political science major, Jeanette Clark, freshmen, {K)litical science major, Quincita Register, freshmen, nursing major and Tonya Arnold, senior, nursing major.
