It also provides a place where members can socialize. Here at WSSU, the plots represent honor, love, and pride for an organization. Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., a nursing sorority, has joined the ranks of other Greek letter organizations in obtaining a plot. Decorated with green and yellow chairs and benches, it is located behind Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.’s plot Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. is a national organization of professional nurses and nursing students with the motto of “Service for Humanity.” It was founded on October 16, 1932 by Ailene Ewell at Freeman’s Hospital across the street from Howard University in Washington, D.C. The membership consists of more than 5,000 nurses and nursing students with 93 chapters in 26 states with other chapters overseas. There are currently nine undergraduate chapters and 22 graduate chapters in the Southeast Region. WSSU’s chapter is a member of this region. WSSU ‘s chapter, Chi Chi Beta, was chartered on March 16, 1991. It has approximately 35 members. Melanie Hayes is the chapter’s president See Chi Eta Phi, Page 15 \ Chancellor Presents Vision Statement BY ANDREW MEANS Staff Writer Faculty, staff, and distinguished guests were present at a special assembly held earlier this month concerning the future of Winston-Salem State University. The assembly’s keynote speaker was Chancellor Alvin Schnexider. During the assembly, Schnexider discussed a new emphasis for the university. “WSSU will become a student-centered historically black university where students can maximize their options and fulfill their potential,” he explained. He also said that WSSU will place, “ greater emphasis on the matriculation of students and aim to better prepare them for the rigors of life.” Members WSSU’s faculty, who have always been about the business of preparing students to meet the demands of their specific majors, will now be joined by the staff in making sure that students are well suited to participate in the competitive job markets of the 21st century. In November 1996, the Chancellor established the Commission on the Future of the University which was designed to establish a university-wide planning model. The model monitors the university’s progress by reviewing goals and objectives needed to promote change, and set performance measurements and systems already in place, WeCcome Jiome sACums and Visiting friends!
