The News Argus October 1997 - Page 4 — CAMPUS HAPPENINGS WSSU Alumna Returns To Serve The 1997 members of Scarlet Lace Photo By : Traci T. King BY TRAQ TIERA A.KING Suff Writer Chandra Alston Photo By: Traci T. King “Things are different this year. We are showing new moves, new faces are on the squad and it’s going to take more time, dedication and true team effort to make this group flow as one,” said Scarlet Lace’s new coach. Chandra Alston, a 1993 Winston- Salem Stale University graduate, former Scarlet Lace dancer 1991-1993 and former Ms. Mozik 1993, has returned to her alma mater and Scarlet Lace to help keep the spirit, spunk and fun alive for the WSSU fans. Scarlet Lace, the dance line in the Marching Band was established in 1987. The 15 young women who comprise this year's dancers want lo ensure they keep the skill, techniques and movement alive. “ These ladies practice two hours daily to stay in good shape, so they can be tight and toned to fit into those little uniforms," explained Alston. "Although most of these ladies have danced in the past with various groups and in high school, dancing with Scarlet Lace on Bowman Gray's field is all together different.” According to Demetrius Jeter, a returning Scarlet Lace dancer, “The crowd isn’t always with you; but we need their support. We are here to give that vibe back to them." Why did Alsston want to return to campus to help the dancers? “ As a graduate of WSSU, it was very important to share the joys that come from the unification of dance with these young ladies," she explained. "College involves learning, meeting people, growing, sharing and having a great time." Niche’ Vereen, a returning dancer, serves as Scarlet Lace's captain. Vereen has the task of keeping a watchful eye on the dancers when they perform on the field. The other members of Scarlet Lace include: Trina Holiness, Kalisha Rainey, Tahira Kent, Danielle Graves, Tika Hood, Lisa Hillian, Shanika McClain, Nonya Hunter, Kimberley Kniffley, Kenita Upchurch, Tara Travis, Anjaleigh Robinson, Kristy Johnson and Demetrius Jeter. “ I put a lot into the group, so I expect a lot in return,” said Alston. “The members of Lace must carry themselves like the ladies they are because Lace members represent WSSU when they are here on campus performing, in the community or at away games. It’s also important that they keep their grades up, participate in community service projects and stay physically fit.” Argus Editor Receives Scholarship NEWSRELEASE Washington D.C.
