November 1998 • 11 Scholarships Information Sources AMBUCS SCHOLARSHIP FOR THERAPISTS Eligibility; Award is available to junior and senior college students enrolled in a bachelor’s or graduate degree program. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have financial need, a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and express an intent to enter clinical practice in one of the following fields; occupational therapy, recreational therapy, music therapy, speech language, pathology, or hearing audiology. The institution to which the student is accepted must be accredited by the appropriate health/therapy profession authority. Value; Awards range in value from S500-S2,500. Grants are deposited each semester to the student’s credit account with the financial aid office of the institution. AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY for MINORITY SCHOLARS PROGRAM Eligibility; Award is available to high school seniors, college freshman, sophomores, or juniors intending to or already majoring in chemistry, biochemisrty, or chemical engineering. Applicant must be African American, Hispanic/Latino, or American Indian and a U.S. citizen. Recipient must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and demonstrate financial need. Student’s academic transcripts must reflect high achievement in chemistry or science and on overall GPA of a “B” or better. Candidates must have leadership skills, diverse extracurricular activities, and have participated in community service activities. Value; Award is dependent on funding, number of scholarships awarded, and financial need. The application must be submitted between Nov. 1 and Feb. 15 each year. AMERICAN SOCIETY OF HIGHWAY ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIPS Eligibility; The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or a resident alien. Candidate must be enrolled in an in-state four year college program, leading to a bachelor’s degree in a transportation-related field, preferably civil engineering. Selection is made on the basis of academics, work experience, leadership positions and career goals. Value; A minimum of three scholarships of SI,000 will be handed out annually. JAMES LEE LOVE SCHOLARSHIPS Eligibility; The award is available to a full time North Carolina resident undergraduate with financial need approximately the same amount as the fixed annual stipend. The recipient must enroll at one of the 16 constituent University of North Carolina institutions. Only one award each year is made available. It is non-renewable. Value; Is dependent on the annual income from the Uust fund. Last year, the award was $2,6(X). TYLENOL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Eligibility; The Tylenol Brand Scholarship Program recognizes student’s leadership contributions in the community, academic, and/or athletic activities. The winners must have applied or be enrolled in a two or four year institution. Value; The program will award $10,000 merit scholarships to 10 students and 81,000 merit scholarships to 500 students nationally in 1999. Application Procedure; Information can be obtained from participating retail stores or by calling the number (800)676- 8437 NORTH CAROLINA BAR ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP Eligibility; Award is available to natural or adopted children of North Carolina law enforcement officers who were killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. Application must be made before the student reaches his/her 27th birthday. Recipient must be enrolled or accepted for admission in a college, vocational training school or other educational institution approved by the Scholarship Committee of the Young Lawyers Division of the North Carolina Bar Association. Selection is made on the basis of financial need and merit. Value; Student may receive up to $2,000 per academic year (but not more than a total of $8,000 for any educational program. Box 3688, Cary, NC 27519, or by calling (800) 662-7407. 1999 Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowships For Minorities Program; Approximately 50 predoctoral Fellowships to be awarded in a nationwide competition sponsored by the Ford Foundation and administered by the National Reasearch Council. Eligibility Requirements: 1. Applicants must be United Stxites citizens or nationals who arc members of one or the following ethnic minority groups; Native American Indian, Mexican , American/Chicana/Chicano, Alaskan Nativc(Eskimo or Aleut),Native Pacific Islander (Polynesian or Micronesian), Black/African American, Puerto Rican 2. Awards will be made for study in research based doctoral programs(PhD or ScD) in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, engineering, mathematics, physical sciences and life sciences, or for interdisciplinary programs composed of two or more eligible disciplines. 3. Applicants must be at or near the beginning of study toward a PhD or ScD degree; applicants already enrolled in an eligible doctoral program must require at least three years of full-time support as of BY JOHN CORPENING Reporter Homecoming was a success for the WSSU Rams who slipped past the Fayetteville State Broncos on October 3, 1998. This win sparked a two year homecoming tradition, since the loss to Livingstone College in 1996. The Rams were 2-2 overall, and 2-0 in the CIAA conference during the Homecming game. The Ram’s outlook on the season as it progresses is very simple; they must eliminate any mistakes if they want to be in contention for a CIAA championship, which has not been won by WSSU since 1991. One of the star players for this year’s homecoming game was sophomore wide receiver Anthony Hines. September 1999 in order lo complete their PhD or ScD degree. 4. Scores from the Graduate Record Examinations(GRE) General Test are required for all Predoctoral Fellowship applicants. Stipends and Allowances; Annual stipend of 514,000 to the fellow and an annual institutional allowance of $7,500 to the fellowship institution in lieu of tuition and fees for three years. Hines, who made the All CIAA Rookie Team last year, led the game with two outstanding touchdown efforts. “ 1 fell that the game was a little closer than it should have been, but we made some mistakes and came together as a team and pulled it out,” .said Hines. “My personal outlook on the season is that if we slay focused and maintain our poise on offense and defense, we will be the CIAA champions. “As for my future plans, I would love to extend my career in the NFL, but that doesn’t always happen so 1 am pursuing a degree in Sport Management as well.” Well Ram fans, as you can see the Rams are well on their way, so do them a favor and give them some support.
