A few words from the editor Where are the lives of our youth headed? On a rcccnt trip lo our nation’s capital, I happened to be channel surfing in the hotel room where I was slaying. While trying to find something lo watch from the very limited selections of channels, a startling news broadcast grabbed my attention. “Two 7-year-old students at an elementary .school in the DC area forced a 5-year-old to perform sexual acts on them,” is what the news reporter stated. At lirst I couldn’t believe what 1 was hearing and thought that maybe it was a mistake, but unfortunately it wasn’t. Indeed two 7-year-old “children” forced a 5-year-old to perform sexual acts. I truly find this hard lo believe. At ihe age of 7, your mind should be on learning to read, writing in cursive or playing kickball and d(xlge ball with the other neighborhood kids at least that is what wa.s on my mind at that age. It is unfortunate how things of the past that I enjoyed as a child, seem .so meaningless to children today. We have small children and teenagers committing adiili crimes! Sharonda Wilcox Recently there was the news report of Tiffany Nicole Young, a 10-year-old girl from Burlington who was murdered and found only minutes away from her home. She was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by three people who allegedly knew Young. Harold Wesley Jones, 16, Donhia D. Bynum, 17, and Jones" 13-year-old nephew, all under the age of 18 arc being chargcd with committing adult crimes. However, relatives of Jones and Bynum arc .saying that the accused are not mentally capable of committing the crime becau.se they arc mildly retarded, the family feels that they were inurnidated by authorities lo confess to the murder. In .spite of our stiffer laws, more and more crimcs are being committed by children- crimes ranging from rape to murder. It makes me wonder whether or not the children commitung these horrible crimes arc victims as well. Society seems to almost overlook ihe fact that the individuals committing these crimes arc children. Although that doesn’t dismiss the fact that they have committed a crime, what are we allowing to happen when they arc constantly exposed to violence in videos including the video games that they play in their homes. Children, especially young children, sometimes have a difficult time distinguishing between the real and the imaginary. Of course, in the video games when you conquer the villians in Mortal Kombat or when one of the players dies you can always push the Restart button and play again, but in reality when you commit murder or rape there isn’t a Restart button and you can’t bring back that life or take back what you have done. Society needs to start monitoring more closely whai we arc allowing our youth to witness, but before ii becomes the nation’s problem , ii has to start at the very beginning, with the parents by encouraging them not to allow their children to be misled by what they witness on television or in the video games that they play. Parents should begin to tcach their children the difference between reality and imaginary play when they notice that children are beginning to question what they see on TV or when they start to imitate what they sec in movies. Our children are our future but if we don’t tcach them and guide them in the right direction they may end up in our federal prisons for commiting crimes much serious than stealing candy and bubble gum from convenience stores. You said it: 46President Clinton did something wrong and he should have handled the situation in a better way. lb me it was entrapment on Ms. Lewinsky’s part. Now they’re talking about impeachment: do the republicans really want to do this? No. Impeach Bill and you give Vice President Gore two years to gain some credibility, and that would make him that much more difficult to beat in the up coming election.? 5 -Anthony McKoy - think that everyone should leave him alone, and let him and his family move on with their lives. I feel he is the best president we have ever had.? 5 - Jerrel McKenzie - 4 4 Yes. The president did something wrong but it doesn’t have anything to do with how he runs the country. I don’t think he should be impeached because his term is just about over anyway. Leave him alone! ?? - Brannon Hester - 44l feel that the media is overemphasizing the president’s situation. I think particular bias is being shown towards President Clinton. I do not believe his wrongdoing should be overlooked, nor do I think he should be impeached. President Clinton has done more for the country than any other president in history and that should be taken into consideration. - Kellita Poindexter - The News Argus Sharonda Wilcox - Editor Keisha Leach - News Editor Jason Smith - Entertainment Editor Rasheed Oluwa - Sports Editor Reagan Bolden - Advertising Dr. Ruby Rodney — Copy Editing Adviser Emily Burch, Tanya Wiley — Advisers The News Argus is printed monthly by students and for students and faculty of this university.
