One group that is definitely preparing is the WSSU Varsity Cheerleaders. The cheerleaders are very excited about cheering the teams on to a championship and also making sure they are ready to perform and be the best at the CIAA Cheerleading Exhibition that will take place Saturday, February 27. The varsity cheerleading squad has had their focus on the exhibition since the middle of January. They have been creating, learning, and polishing their technique, stunts, and overall presentation of the squad and what they will perform. One of the coaches, Mary Bennett, says “Fans should expect to see no less than the best frpm the WSSU varsity cheerleading squad. The young ladiesi dedication and commitment to serving the university through physical ability and school spirit will definitely be on display during the week of CIAA” The cheerleaders practice everyday even Sundays except on game days. The practices include creating cheers and chants, technique, dances, stunts and gymnastics. The ladies incorporate these talents into one to make a routine of four to five minutes. For instance, the dance routine that is performed while the Ram Pep Band plays a common Ram Jam. The girls form a straight line across the base line of the court with arms moving in a clockwise rotation leading to a clap, to the beat of the music with their hips shaking from left to right. Their toes are pointed and legs are straight as they follow a routine of steps that conclude with a jump kick. All CIAA cheerleading squads are expected to perform. There will be six squads to perform from 9 to 9;45 am and the others from 1 to I: 45. Nicole Blackwell, a second-year varsity cheerleader says “We practice hard everyday and we are going to give an exciting performance.” Tennis team readies for season BY SEM.AJ ROBINSON Reporter Editor’s Note: This is part of a semester-long series. A new season is about to begin under Coach Leon Kay at Winston-Salem State University, and they are ready to put their talent on the court. In his 5th year as coach of the tennis team, coach Kay led last years team to a 4th place finish in the CIAA Conference, and to the semifinals in the playoffs. Coach Kay offers a wealth of experience, having coached on all levels for 25 years. One of his biggest accomplishments, is having coached professionally on the Davis Cup team. Coach Kay has also been instrumental in getting scholarships for high school students who have wanted to play tennis in college. “I feel there should be an interest in tennis at the college level,” says coach Kay. “Many professional players would be better prepared and better tennis players had they played the game in college.” What makes the tennis team at WSSU unique is the aspect of the women being able to play on the mens team. For instance, if a woman player has played well through out the season, she can continue lo play the men in the playoffs- which coach Kay believes that this will strengthen the women's competition. The 1999 tennis season will get underway with a match at home against Johnson C. Smith Univ. on March 16. The season will end with the CIAA Tennis Tournament April 15-17. For those interested in joining the Ram Tennis Team, please call coach Kay at 750-2141, or Adrian Ferguson, the sports information director, at 750-2143. 1999 Tennis Schedule March; 16 Johnson C. But c’mon. A second for beating up two old guys at a traffic light. That is just plain stupid. Mike can complain all he wants that he’s getting a raw deal, but the fact remains that he has no one to blame but himself. Most people who are on probation and want to stay out of prison try to hold a little bit of restraint. Not Mike. No, he wants to beat up on two old guys over a traffic disagreement in front of witnesses, plead no contest to assault charges, and then complain when he’s sent to prison for violating parole. Whatever. The fact remains that Tyson is 32 years old, on the brink of financial ruin, and will probably never have the opportunity to regain, the millions he made during his boxing career. Add a three year prison sentence on top of that, and you’ve got the makings of a ‘washed up’ boxer. The sad thing is that Tyson has no one to blame but himself. Sorry for rehashing old news, but am I the only person who believes that Chris Chandler got raw deal. Sure, Elway had a good day throwing the ball, not have won the Super Bowl. Everyone should band together and together and change the MVP vote so that Chandler can get the MVP award he deserves. March Madness NBA Madness has finally hit.
