8* April 1999 Sports Rodman & Electra end marriage Rasheed Oluwa Sports Editor Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra are getting a divorce. Who would’ve guessed that it was gonna happen now. They were supposed to separate months ago. The fact Rodman was constantly away from Hiectra must have helped to stretch the marriage out. Speaking of unhappy marriages, when is George Shinn going to end it with the Charlotte Hornets. Just the mention ol Michael Jordan pursuing ownership of the Hornets is the best thing that has happened to the franchise in years. Kace it. In order to win in professional sports these days, teams have to spend money. Shinn has refused to do that. If you don’t believe this than ask Alonzo Mourning, Matt Geiger, Vlade Divac, Kenny Anderson, and Glenn Rice. Why prolong the mediocrity? Please Shinn, just sell the team and get on with your life. If Elton Brand has any more doubts about whether or not he should stay at Duke, all he has to do is look at Corliss Williamson’s career. That’s Brand’s future if he decides to leave now. He’ll be another small power forward with underdeveloped perimeter skills. And that’s the positive outlook on things. Things could turn out worse for Brand if he decides to leave. He could end up like former North Carolina star Antawn Jamison. A total nonfactor. Say what you want about professional wrestling, at least they know how to stage their events. The same can’t be said for boxing. Just look at the Evander Holyfield vs. Lennox Lewis match for proof. Didn’t the one judge who ruled the fight in favor of Lewis realize that Holyfield is the fan favorite. The fan favorite always wins the fight. In the major sports, this has been a good year for Winston-Salem State University. The football team, basketball team, and softball team have all given top notch efforts. Maybe the school will use the momentum from this year and ride it into future success. It would be nice if the athletics program could brag about something other than Yancey Thigpen being one of the highest paid wide receivers in the NFL. To think, this area had an opportunity to bring Major League Baseball team close by. Not to take anything away from NASCAR, but the sight of cars driving around a track just isn’t going to get it done this summer. This region is badly in need of real sport. TRACK, from page 6 File Photo Track members: Fred Malloy, Darrick Neely, Darrius Wall, Marco Lily. SPIRIT, from page 6 there. These last three years have been the best years of my life. f got a chance to do things that I had never done before. I fell in love with WSSU. I feel alot of that school spirit came from marching in the band and now from being in the Mozik Modeling Troupe. 1 enjoy going to school here and I can’t understand why people continue to put the school down. Students at WSSU recognize the problem but we too quick to complain about what isn’t going on and criticize what is. The problem has been addressed and now it is time to make that first step. We need to take the initiative to support our school whether or not we have a gum jam. College is suppose to be the best years of our lives. We are suppose to leave with more than an education...school spirit.
