News Argus, April/May 2000 ROBINSON The Sports Corner With Semaj Robinson Staying focused on goals is key to life, survival He began playing baseball as a 10 year old on playgrounds in Oakland, Calif. As eager as he was to learn the game, it was other options that kept him from it. He hit the ball hard. He ran fast and caught everything that came his way. He was a nat ural for the game of baseball. He once hit a ball so far, his coach checked his bat to see if it had cork in it. He would often tell his mother that he wanted to be a professional baseball player. She could only smile because she never actually saw him play. A tight work schedule and a lack of interest never allowed her to see his talent. When he entered high school, he always knew he could play with and even bet ter than his classmates. He tried out for the team and impressed the coaches so much, they called a semi-pro league to come and watch him practice. The league was very impressed. A 6-3, 220- pound right fielder who could hit from both sides of the plate and who could also pitch was an awesome commodity they could use. This young man who was headed for star dom was ready for the majors. But something happened. He never returned their calls. His attention was diverted by his friends. He became impatient with school and want ed the ability to have money all the time. He turned to selling drugs in his neighborhood. His status as a dealer grew. People in the neighborhood feared his presence and he began to use his status to run sections of Oakland. His dream of becoming a professional base ball player faded. He stopped playing the gam.e that professional scouts thought he would be so good at. He became big in a profession, but it wasn't from baseball. The sad part is that he became too big. Other dealers didn't like who he became. So they took him out. Killed at 21, he never got the opportunity to change because he wanted to live a life that was faster than his base-running skills. His name was Adrian Dewayne Scott-my brother. JV cheerleaders need budget and support Christina Simons Reporter Cheerleaders on the junior varsity squad say that they need a budget. "What 1 don't think some people under stand is that these young ladies are athletes," said Anne Little, the athletic director. The other sports teams on campus receive funds, but money is never given to the junior varsi ty cheerleading squad. "We've always shuf fled money around for them," Little said. "When 1 first got here about six years ago, the junior varsity cheerleaders were wearing homemade outfits. In the '97-'98 school year, there was no junior varsity team. When they were formed again the following year, they cheered in T-shirts and shorts," Little said. The junior varsity captain, sophomore Christy Wellman, said "Yes, we do have new uniforms this year, but we had to pay for them ourselves. Varsity receives new items all the time, and they don't have to go into their own pockets to get them." Despite the lack of money. Little said, "We try our best to do things for the JV squad to let them know we appreciate what they do. This year the junior varsity squad has gotten to travel to away games, and stay overnight in a hotel. This has never happened before. I'm pleased with where they've come."
