From Page One From the Editor Rid yourself of 'toxic' people Ever had someone you thought was your friend stab you in the back? How about a "clique" you thought was down for you, but instead downed you for all you were worth? Well, i'm sure you do, because we all have experienced those kinds of people before. But what makes us fall into the traps of befriending such negative people? Dana Suggs, the CEO of Kwanzaa Ornaments, spoke to an advertising class about these kinds of people and labled them "toxic" during her lecture. 1 commend her for saying that because I think that the label fits per fectly. Let's think about the Cortney Hill word toxic; toxic means poi sonous and when something poisonus gets into your system it eats away your insides and slowly kills you. That's what hanging around toxic people will do to you. Their toxic ways and behavior will begin to seep into your soul, then take over and slowly kill the 'real' you, and form a 'toxic' you. Yes, it sounds like a disease. If you hang with toxic people how can you say that you do not do the things they do? Don't you know that the crowd you hang with defines who you are? Well, it's true. If you hang with a clique that is known for gos siping or spreading rumors, you, too, will be looked upon as a gossiper who spreads rumors. Besides, if you hang with people that talk about others, most likely they will talk about you. I'm sure you all heard the song by Erykah Badu called "Apple Tree." Well, in the song she gives advice on how to pick your friends. She says to "pick your friends like you pick your fruit..." That's how we all should pick and choose our friends. "Toxic" people are out for many things, and the one thing they are out for is to pull you down. Then, they try to defame you by spreading rumors. I will never understand how people find pleasure in spreading lies. But the people that listen and believe the rumors are feeding into their silly little games. So to stop the spread of lies and rumors, just do not listen to it. You must realize that toxic people do not want you to do better than them, be better than them, or even act better than them. They would rather see you fall and find joy in it, than see you succeed. Want to get away from them, simply disas sociate yourself from them. Fill your sched ule up so much that you won't even have time to even think their name. Besides, the people that work so hard to down you and talk bad about you will sooner or later find themselves by themselves. So remember, keep your head up, strive for excellence, and realize who's for you and who's against you because toxic people are every where. And to the toxic people at WSSU and across the world: get a life and grow up! WITHERSPOON, from page 1 will not be flagged." Witherspoon also discussed the attitude of the staff along with the appearance of a staff shortage. "The staff has gone through customer-ser- vice training to better assist students. Students should be treated like customers and our staff is presently going through some other training. " The shortage of staff may be the reason why some support offices on campus may close earlier than the posted hours. Witherspoon said that although the offices are expanding hours, still they are not sup posed to close earlier than the posted ones. "We are also expanding the hours to accom modate the needs of our evening students." Witherspoon said that he will continue looking more closely into these matters. SACS, from page 1 tion," Berry said. WSSU will receive a preliminary report from the visit ing team in early summer, and then it will begin address ing some of the recommendations. WSSU won't receive its final recommendations and notice of its reaffirmation status unhl SACS meets in December. "The average number of recommendations a university typically receives is 30. We were happy to be below the average," Berry said. "Overall, I feel that we had a good team and a very good team chair. I feel good about the visit." LOSE 20 POUNDS IN TWO WEEKS!
