News Argus, September 2001 Campus News S.T.A.R. program helps alumni recruit students Courtesy of WSSU’s Web site A new program has been established recently at Winston- Salem State University to train a team of alumni as recruiters to attract the brightest stu dents. The goal of the Specially Trained Alumni Recruiter (S.T.A.R.) program will be to assist the WSSU Office of Admissions in the recruitment process, achieve greater name recognition for the university and reach a larger number of prospective students. Interested alumni volunteers will attend a series of training institutes conducted by Admissions Office staff in tar geted local and regional areas of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and New York. Other areas will be added as the pro gram progresses. They are provided training in recruitment techniques, given the materials needed to be suc cessful, a specific time frame in which they will be needed and access to an Admissions staff member as a point of contact. "Our alumni are a valuable resource that we plan to utilize more in our effort to attract quality students to WSSU," said Patrice Mitchell, WSSU director of admissions. "This program will also allow our alumni to become even more involved in and con nected to the activities of the university." A presentahon about the new program was made to alumni chapter presidents during the WSSU Annual Alumni Retreat held in July. A similar presentation is scheduled for the general alum ni association meeting on Sept. 1, which will be followed by a training session on Sept. 8 at WSSU for local alumni chapter representatives from Winston- Salem, Greensboro, High Point, Charlotte and Lexington.
