Rams win opener against Carson-Newman
By Donutea Johnson
Argus Reporter
On Saturday, Aug. 25,
Winston-Salem State's
football team began the
2001 season with a 27-16
victory over Carson-
Newman, who is ranked
No. 5 in the NCAA
Division II coaches poll, at
Bowman Gray Stadium.
The Rams referred to the
game as a "respect game."
The Rams came into
this season with mixed
feelings since the team has
undergone a few changes
from last year's 2000
CIAA championship
team. The Rams had a
golden opportunity to
gain respect by putting on
a good showing against
Carson-Newman.
The Rams would be
without starting quarter
back Rodney Milboume
and running back Vincent
Wilkins. Although the
Rams came out emotion
ally charged, it was the
Eagles who came out
focused and ready to play.
The Eagles jumped to an
early 10 -0 lead early in
the first quarter. The 10-

Caldwell, the director of

ment at Iowa Valley
Community College
District, has been named
director of athletics at
Winston-Salem State
University effective Aug.
27.
In making the appoint
ment, Chancellor Harold
L. Martin Sr., said, "We
are pleased to have Dr.
Caldwell join our team
here at Winston-Salem
State. He has more than
20 years of higher educa
tion experience as a senior
administrator in the areas
of athletics, teaching and
fund raising, and I believe
he will serve the universi
ty well in strengthening
our athletic programs, our
bonds with supporters of
athletics and leadership
programs for our student-
athletes."
Caldwell replaces Anne
Little, who resigned as
point lead must have been
a wake-up call for the
Rams because they imme
diately made a strong
charge at the end of the
first quarter.
The Rams seized the
momentum, capitalizing
on Eagles turnovers, and
scored 15 points in the
second quarter, which
included a fumble recov
ery by safety Stephon
Kelly and a 20-yard field
goal. A one-yard goal line
run by running back
Damone Washington late
in the second quarter
charged the fans at
Bowman Gray Stadium.
Washington had an
impressive outing, as it
was his first start rushing
for a productive 100 yards
on 25 carries. However,
Carson-Newman was able
to quiet the crowd and
take back the momentum
with a long 34-yard TD
bomb from Eagles quar
terback Jaaren Nesbit to
wide receiver Alvin
Sanders after being tipped
into the air by two Rams
defenders. The Eagles
would take a slim 16-15
lead into the half.
The Rams came out in
the second half with
renewed energy Their
relentless defenses caused
seven turnovers and sti
fled an already frustrated
Carson-Newman team.
Neither team was able
to put in points on the
board in the third quarter.
This meant that the
fourth quarter play would
decide the game.
The fourth quarter
would prove deadly for
