News Argus, September 2001 Sports more than $1.5 million during his time at WVSC, from 1987 to 1991. While at Miles College, Caldwell led the basket ball team to four consecu tive conference champi onships and advanced to the NCAA Division 111 NCAA finals once. He was also named Coach of the Year in 1978 by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In addition, he was the college's Teacher of the Year in 1979 and the col lege's Most Outstanding Administrator in 1977. Caldwell earned his B.S. in Sociology/Psychology at Miles College. He earned an M.A. degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from the University of Alabama — Birmingham, and his Ph.D. from Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa. While at West Virginia State College, Caldwell was named the West Virginia Conference Coach of the Year in 1990, and Athletic Director of the Year in 1991. He built program funding from $200,000 in 1987 to $500,000 in 1988 and con tinued to build funding to RAMS from page 7 the Eagles when the Rams turned up their play to a championship level. The Rams scored three times in the last eight minutes and never looked back. Two field goals gave the Rams their first lead at 21-16. Then to put the icing on the cake. Rams linebacker Robert Mackey was able to break up a pass, and Roderick Pitts was there grab the interception and triumphantly run for the 18-yard touchdown return. With the upset over Carson-Newman the Rams proved that they are a force to be reck oned with not just in the ClAA but the NCAA. However, the Rams do have their work cut out for them. They traveled to Alabama on Sept. 1 to take on Tuskegee in a rematch of the 2000 Pioneer Bowl. Unfortunately, due to deadline restric tions, the staff of The Nexv Argus was unable to include the results of that game in this issue. Daymond Lindell named women's basketball coach Courtesy of WSSU's Web site Daymond Lindell, head women's basketball coach and director of student activities at Voorhees College, in Denmark, S.C., has been named Winston-Salem State University's head women's basketball coach, effective Aug. 22.. "1 am pleased to welcome Coach Lindell to our team at Winston-Salem State University,' said Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. "He has 12 years of coaching experience at the high school, AAU and collegiate levels. He will be a tremendous addition to our athletics program and to the university family." Lindell replaces Debra Clark, who resigned in April to accept a coaching position at Florida A&M State University, a Division 1 program. Lindell has ser\ ed as head women's basketball coach and director of student activities at Voorhees College since 2000. Research grants available Applications for water resources research grants under the Institute's Program for Fiscal Year 2002-03 for faculty mem bers will be accepted until Oct. 5. No exceptions. The anticipated start date is March 1. All applicants will be notified of the review process by Feb. 15. Institute grants must be completed within a 12- month period.
