Kermit Blount w.s.s.u Rams thump Bulls 17-0 By Donutea Johnson Argus Reporter WSSU's Rams came out to win, and win they did by shutting out Johnson C. Smith University 17-0. Coming into the ninth game of the season, the Winston-Salem State University Rams football team had a number of motivations to get them going. One of these was the fact that it was homecoming, and a team always wants to win and put up a good showing at homecoming with more than 8,000 alumni, students, faculty and hometown fans there to cheer them on. Another motivation was coming in with a record of 6-2, 5-1 in conference play, a win over JCSU (2-5) the Rams (6-2) would qualify for the CIAA Championship game to played at Bowman Gray Stadium Nov. 10. It was a chilling 47 degrees at the time of kickoff. Both teams came out charged in the first quarter display ing good defense. Both teams were held scoreless in the first period of play. Perhaps it was the weather, but the Rams seemed to have trou ble moving the ball. However, in the second quarter they were able to put together a drive led by quarter back Josh McGee. With 10:54 left in the half, McGee completed a 13- yard pass to Arnell Wooten for the first touchdown of the game. The Rams went into halftime with a 7-0 lead. In the third quarter, the Rams' defense pounded the Bulls, contain ing them in every way possible. The rush from the defensive linemen and linebackers forced Smith quar terback Andrew Momon outside of the pocket throughout the game. Pressure from Robert Mackey, J.T. Elliot, Jai-Famon Jackson and Roderick Picks accounted for three sacks for a total loss of 23 yards for Smith. Defensive back Stephon Kelly also stepped up and had two crucial interceptions for the Rams. The Rams' offense picked up were it left off in the first half. Damon Washington maneuvered his way to a 7-yard touchdown run to increase the lead to 14-0 with 10:14 to go in the third. In the fourth quarter, kicker Ashton Oakley boot ed a 44-yard field goal to put the nail in the coffin for Smith. The Rams walked out of the homecom ing game with a 17-0 victory, which clinched the Western Division and earned a birth in the CIAA champi onship where they will try to three- peat as CIAA champs. SportSpotlight Bess, Graham each doing their best to help teams win By Daysha Williams Argus Reporter Dara J. Bess Let's shed some light on a spe cial outside hitter/defensive spe cialist guard. Dara J. Bess of Shelby is a first year freshman volleyball player with high hopes and dreams. "1 have two mottos, 'No pain No gain', and 'What doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger,' " she said. "Volleyball is like a job. You get out of it simply what you choose to put in it. The harder you work, the more it pays off." She is a nursing major with a goal of getting her RN license, and she wants to go on to medical school to become a pediatrician. She said, "People are going to talk about you rather you're doing good or bad. You have to be your self, and not worry about what outsiders say about you." Jonathan Graham Wide receiver Jonathan Graham is leading the football- team in receiving yards. He said, "My goals are simple. I want WSSU to be first in the CIAA. I want us to be division two national champions, and I want to come out on top in the conference." When asked about how much football really meant to him, he said, "It's my life. You can use football in everyday situations; I know I do. Besides, I've had a deep love for the game every since I was little." He is from Greensboro and is a therapeutic recreation major. 3. How many RAM football players have gone on to play in the NFL for at least one full season? a. 5 b. 9 c. 11 d. 14 5. The all time leading rusher in RAM history is? a. Richard Huntley b. Tory Woodbury c. Barry Sanders d. Kermit Blount Answers from October's issue: 1. b The Rams won three CIAA champi onships in the '90s 2. d The basketball team won the NCAA championship in 1967 3. a Earl "The Pearl" Monroe played on the 1967 men's championship basketball team and went on to the NBA Hall of Fame. See December's issue for the nusTvers to Novetnber's trhiia chtillen^^e. JORDAN from page 3 he's donating his first year's salary of $1 million to the New York and Washington terrorist attack relief funds. He definitely improves the NBA's slumping atten dance. The NBA's atten dance has sunk lower than the National Hockey League's. He'll provide fans who never had a chance to see him play the opportunity to see the greatest of all time. If that's bad, then I don't know what is good. So why can't Michael Jordan do the same? Some feel that he left when he was on top, and there is no better way to leave the game than by hitting your last shot to win the cham pionship in the last five seconds. Jordan told reporters in his first press conference since announcing his return "No one can take away my six champi onships." I think he has a pretty good point, he still goes down as the greatest competitor in sports histo ry. How can we condemn the same desire to com pete that one him those six championships, five league MVPs, 10 scoring titles, six MVP titles in the finals and so on. Jordan used the preseason as a stage to prove to all of his doubters that he can take care of himself. Especially in his 41-point game against the New Jersey Nets. Whether you like it or not, MJ is back and ready to dazzle and us with the same basketball skill and clutch play that left fans with countless memories and emotions.
