10 The News Argus, March 2002 -STUDENT eatures Black artists still on display at Diggs Gallery By Nakida McDaniel ARGUS ARTS EDITOR With Black History Month recently drawing to an end, many may still be searching for things to do to continue the cele bration. If you haven't already been, now is a great time to visit Diggs Art Gallery and observe its new exhi bitions, which will contin ue through March 30, 2002. Works by several Black artists from various backgrounds fill the gallery In fact, upon entrance, one may have a difficult time deciding which way to go because many colors, shapes, and artistic mediums draw you to every comer of the room. The Soul of Brazil: Works by Afro-Brazilian Artists feature soulful pieces by Carlos Henrique "Bakari" Santos and Fabio Almeida. Both artists' works consists of an assortment of colors, pat terns, and symbols that result in joyful, blissful encounters with Afro- Brazilian life through paintings and etchings of brass, copper, and nickel. "Letters from Afar": Betrice Lebreton was per haps the most intriguing of the exhibitions. Probably because it con sisted of several feministic themes which women of color can appreciate. "I Bring You Peace," a water media on board, is likely to capture your every sen timent. Freedom, joy, and happiness spill from the picture and may remind its viewers of a treasured quilt. The exhibition Pempamsie: Unity is Strength, Contemporary Art from Ghana, is likely to keep appreciators of art busy for hours. Every painting offers something more invigorating. Modern Africa is depicted on various mediums and offers enlightening per spectives concerning spiri tuality and social issues. Notable favorites are "Market Shapes in Motion" by Edinam Wisdom Kudowor, "Courting" by Kofi Setordji, and "The Out- Dooring" by Kofi Agorsor. TERRY TELLS IT ALL: Love is in and out of the air By Bridgett Terry ARGUS REPORTER (Oops!) Mike Tyson is in trouble again after assaulting a 38-year old woman at the Pro Bowl football game in Honolulu. R-Kelly is denying all allegations associating him with the sex tape with the underage female, (1 am not surprised). Three African- Americans are up for Oscars, Halle Berry for "Monster's Ball," Denzel Washington for "Training Day" and Will Smith for "Ali." Brandy is back with a new look and a new hubby. She married music pro ducer Robert Smith in a secret cer- TERRY emony this past summer. They are also expecting a baby. juanita Jordan announced that she was diminishing the divorce papers and keeping the ring, (looks like a serious case of Love and Basketball). Wesley Snipes has been slapped in the face with a Janet Jackson proves to the v\^orld she's all grow^n up Nakida McDaniel ARGUS ARTS EDITOR "Control to get what I want, control now I'm all grown up." If anyone questioned Janet Jackson's control or maturity, all of their questions were answered Feb. 17 when HBO aired Jackson's "All for You" tour. The talent ed performer shocked, entertained and mesmer ized viewers while prov ing she is definitely all grown up. As popular music fans have come to expect, Janet pulled out all the stops on what may be her last tour. Televised live from Hawaii, the tour gave on lookers a chance to enjoy supreme dancing and singing mixed in with some funky costumes and props. If that was not enough to entice fans there was a surprise celebrity appearance by Music Review Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot on Janet's single "Son of a Gun." The concert was beyond a doubt a smash. However let's face it, when a star of Janet's sta tus hits the road there is always a chance that your favorite song will not make it into the night's line up. But with the "All for You" tour that was not a problem. Janet did an exceptional job of performing hot new songs, and mixing in the oldies but goodies. Songs performed include "All for you", "Son of A Gun", Rhythm Nation," "Control," and "Nasty" just to name a few. If you missed HBO's televised "All for You" tour check show times, and catch it during the next airing. paternity lawsuit by an Indiana woman who Snipes has been off with for 15 years. She is not certain that it is his child, but believes it is a possi bility. The daughter of Jeb Bush is caught in a cover up scandal. She tried to illegally acquire prescrip tion medications three times at three different pharmacies. Pharmacists were told to keep the police out of it. Celine Dion announced that she would be return ing to the spotlight, (to make beautiful music). Patti Labelle sang the National Anthem at this year's All-Star Basketball game where Kobe Bryant won the MVP award for scoring the most points. Kenny Lattimore and Chante Moore got mar ried secretly at a hotel in Jamaica. C-Murder was arrested on second-degree murder charges, he pleads not guilty, (as expected). Erykah and Common are engaged. A date has not yet been set for the two to tie the knot. Diana Ross suffered from a mental breakdown before being admitted to a mental ward in December.
