The News Argus, March 2002 PAID ADVERTISMENT study Abroad in West Africa: Benin, the Focal Point to the Americas Seminar in African and Diaspora Studies This seminar takes place in Benin and Ghana in the center of the most Intensive activities of the slave trade that populated the Americans with Africans. It is interdisciplinary. Participants will study the history, arts, institutions, social and economic conditions, which will provide an insight into transformations observable on both sides of the Atlantic. In addition to the lec tures, excursions, site visits and home stay experience, participants will have free time for special interest acculturation. Each participant will also keep a journal identify a focus and, for academic credit, develop a substantial critical appraisal for a line of action based on the seminar. LECTURES: An Overview of the Blight of Benin Benin, A Historical Sketch Benin in the Era of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade From Gold to Slave Trade:Forts and Castles of Ghana History of the Walls and Rampart of the Abomey Palaces. African Heritage: Appreciation and Problems of Preservation Contemporary Arts of the Republic of Benin Women in Benin Society: Status and Issues; Social, Economic, Education and Health Problems of Regional Economic Integration in West Africa Democracy and Development: Benin in the context of the Region of West Africa From Americas Back to Benin: the “Ritornados” Research Experiences for Undergraduates 2002 Participants will receive a stipend of $3,000 The Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) is pleased to announce the new Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program in Tropical Biology in Costa Rica for the summer of 2002. With funding from the National Science Foundation, the new OTS REU pro gram will provide hands-on, field-oriented research experience to undergraduate students from throughout the United States.
