Lewis Argus Managing Editor When Latoya DesChamps discovered that the Lady Rams were a part of the eight-team field competing for the inau gural NCAA National Collegiate Bowling Championship, she was overjoyed. "I was happy that our talents were finally recog nized and proud to say that w^e w'ere the only team at WSSU to go to a champi onship like this." The National Collegiate Women's Bowling Committee announced in March that the Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams would compete for a national championship in women's bowling. Last month, six lady rams of Winston-Salem State University competed for a national championship. Texas Southern University and the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority co-hosted the championship, which was held April 8-10 at the Emerald Bowl in Houston, Texas. The field included; Central Missouri State University, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Metropctlitan Campus, Universit)' of Mar\’land, Eastern Shore, University of Nebraska, Lincoln, New Jersey City University Sacred Heart Universit)', Southern University, Baton Rouge, and Winston-Salem State University. All eight teams were selcxrted at-large. The inaugural NCAA women's bowling championship received television cover age on the national cable network, ESPN 2. ESPN2 broadcasted 22 of the 88 championships on Easter Sunday. The competition was fierce on the first day of the first-ever championship as the seedings for Friday were being deter mined. The teams battled from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., trying to achieve top seeds. Though the Lady Rams have only a 3- month season (September through November), their competitor's seasons endured the entire school year as they had been bowling up until the champi onship. The Lady Rams found the first session to bo a tough one as they turned in a record of 0-4 overall before breaking for dinner at 3 p.m. WSSU faced the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University in the first match of the day and fell short by the score of 1177 to 781. The loss w'as overshadowed by NJCU's Jennifer Vienes who rolled the first 300 game in the history of the NCAA Women's Bowling Championship. Vienes led the Gothic Knights who improved to 60-33-2 in the victory. WSSU falls to 59-11 on the season, and were led by Lashonda Horton who turned in a team-high 196 for WSSU. rhough the team did not get to play in the final championship (played by University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and Central Missouri State University) CIAA Bowler of the Year, Latoya DesChamps said the entire experience was fun and a definite eye opener. Ms. Anyanwu said that she was proud to be a candidate for the position of Miss WSSU; she has assumed the title modestly and with abun dant pride for the university. "I am so honored to repre sent this institution as Miss WSSU. Most importantly, I want to thank God for putting me in this position. It was a very close race and I am glad that I was the person that He chose for the position. 1 also want to thank everyone for all of the support that I have had. " William "Billy" Dobbs was declared Mr. Ram 2004-2005. Mr. Dobbs, a mass communi cations major from Waxhaw has participated in different on campus organizations they include; Mozik Modeling Troupe and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. Mr. Dobbs displayed his talent as entrepreneur cloth ing designer of the clothing line JbH in the talent portion of the showcase. Dobbs commented. "Holding the position of Mr. Ram is a lot of new responsibility. I can't do some things that 1 may have done before and in some sit uations I have to bite my tongue a bit. I have some big shoes to fill, the past Mr. Rams did a lot. I think that it will be fun though. "I want to thank all of the students that voted me into this position. I hope that I won't let them down. 1 hope to make the position of Mr. Ram as respectable as the position of Miss WSSU. 1 hope to make next year fun." WHEN IT COMES TO GETTING DUMPED...
