There are many factors that have helped shape art of the
past and the way we look at art today. Influences range
from culture, music, location, and even climate. Usually
when most people think of art, they think of Picasso,
Michelangelo, or Rembrandt.
Ever thought of Tibebe Terffa,
Afewer Tekle, or maybe even
Bisrat Shibabow? These artists,
along with many others, are
some of the world's best
and they all come from
Ethiopia. Since last
May, Diggs Gallery has
featured an exhibit that
displays art from these
and other Ethiopian
artists.
"1 never knew that
such beautiful art came from Ethiopia.
I'm so glad to have seen this exhibit and I'm interested in
learning more about art from Ethiopia," said Sheena Oliver,
a nursing major. The exhibit, "The Continuity and Change.
Three Generations of Ethiopian Artists", is a showcase of
the interesting history of art in Ethiopia . It takes visitors
through 50 years of artwork that has blossomed around
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's art capital.
Ethiopia's influence in the world of art has helped shape
the world of art in Africa. The School of Fine Arts and
Design, located in Ethiopia, was created in 1957 and is one
of the most prestigious art schools in Africa. The academy
has been called one of the best of its kind on the continent
and has molded many of Ethiopia's most famous artists,
such as Elias Sime and Desta Hagos.
Now, Ethiopia is sharing its art culture with the world
and you can see it all from the developing stages to the
modem art of today. The Twiggs Gallery will l\ost "Tl\e
Continuity and Change; Three Generations of Ethiopian
Artists" exhibit until Dec. 8.

Winston-Salem State University friends
and family will come together once again for
Homecoming, which will take place Oct. 28
through Nov. 4, on campus and around the
community.
"A lot goes into planning Homecoming
events," Theo Howard, Vice Chancellor of
Student Affairs said in an email. "The
Homecoming committee began meeting in
March of this year in efforts to make
Homecoming 2007 a tremendous success.
This year's change to the committee was built
on past successes and will retool any areas
that need improvement. Everyone agreed
that with regard to WSSU Homecomings, it
was time to 'move from success to signifi
cance.' The theme will be: "RAM HOLUl'-
WOOD HOMECOMING!"
"Surveys were utilized over the summer to
get a feel for what students thought was miss
ing from last year's Homecoming celebra
tion," Howard said. After getting the opinions
of the student body, subcommittees handle
tasks such as campus decorations, the parade,
marketing, and student and alumru events.
Homecoming events take place over two
weeks, and there are many activities to
choose from. The festivities will include sev
eral highlights. The comedy show will be
hosted by Chris Paul of the NBA's New
Orleans Hornets and feature Alex Thomas
(The Jamie Foxx Show,) Damon Williams
(BET's Comicview) and Kevin Hart (Soul
Plane). Other activities include the corona
tion of Miss WSSU and Mr. Ram, the
National Pan-Hellenic Council Step Show,
and on Saturday, the Rams take on the
Hornets of Delaware State University at
Bowman Gray Stadium. Another major event
is the SGA Concert and "Rip the Runway"
Fashion Competition combination event.
Howard explained why he feels that
Homecoming 2007 is sure to stand out from
past Homecoming celebrations:
"We are putting Homecoming in the hands
of the students in hopes the greater participa
tion on the planning and preparation will
create greater buy-in. A Homecoming for the
students, by the students."
In addition to celebrating school spirit and
enjoying Homecoming activities, this year the
Ram family is celebrating its history. The
Celebration of Champions commemorates
the 1967 Division II basketball championship,
as well as the 1977 and 1978 CIAA champi
onship football teams. Several players from
these teams went on to have great profession
al football and basketball careers. The hon-
orees will also serve as the Grand Marshals
for the Homecoming Parade.
