2 The News Argus Oct. 1, 2007 Campus News/Features Hispanic Heritage Month is important, too BACKTheDAY “Tiffany Ross ARGUS STAFF : Just as African Americans ;have Black History Month ; in February, Hispanics have National Hispanic Heritage Month. However, the month begins in the middle of a month on Sept. 15 and ends Oct. 15. For many Latin American countries such as Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, Sept. 15 commemorates the anniversary of their inde pendence. Approximately 44 million Hispanic people are living in the United States. The Hispanic population contin ues to grow. National Hispanic Heritage Month began as a weeklong celebration under the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson. On Aug. 17, 1988, President Gerald Ford passed a law that turned National Hispanic Week into National Hispanic Month. Hispanics are persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central and South American cultures or other Spanish descent. With so many cultures contained under one category, it is rare to hear of the accomplish ments that Hispanics have contributed to this country. Gen. Bernardo de Galvez, Spanish governor of the Louisiana Territory, sent money, rifles, blankets, and medicine to Gen. George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Latinos also raised money to aid the colonies' fight for independ ence. Many Latinos also fought War World II and the Gulf War. Several cities have names that reflect Hispanic influ ence, such as, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Fe, and San Antonio. Dr. Severe Ochoa was the first to dis cover how to synthesize RNA, an organic compound that carries hereditary mate rial in all reproduction. As a result, Ochoa won a Nobel Prize. Dr. Micheal Brookshaw, Winston-Salem State Spanish professor, says it is extremely important for people from other ethnici ties to acknowledge and cel ebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. "Many people do not real ize that the Hispanic culture is tied into our culture through a variety of Hispanic extractions. They are also not aware that their own lineage may include people who have migrated to America and are of the Hispanic heritage." "National [Hispanic] Heritage Month," said jun ior Annabell Romero, "is just as important to me as Black History Month is to African Americans." The tour began on Sept. 7 and ends Nov. 9. Various activities will be set up through out campus, including a video skills chal lenge, an obstacle course, and even a 2-on-2 basketball competition sponsored by the Air Force. Students who have participated in the col lege tour in the past agree that the tour was a highlight of the school year and provided an opportunity to not only have fun with friends but was also enjoyable because it had things that they liked to do. Mini concerts and freestyle battles, which allows students to show off their rhyming skills, are two of the main attractions. The tour is sponsored by several compa nies with considerable clout, including McDonalds, Verizon, Pepsi, Playstation, Merck, and Rap It Up. BET's goal in reaching college-age stu dents across the country is to help students have a good time while helping them leam how to get through challenges they may face during their four years in school. Several information booths and tents will be set up to provide health information, along with a separate "Rap It Up" tent that pro vides information about sex and AIDS. "It gives students a chance to get out on : campus and meet different people and do different things," said Meagan Ross. Ross said her favorite part of the tour last year was the 3-point shootout contest, which allowed people to show off their basketball skills. The tour is also visiting Bethune Cookman, Jackson State, Southern, Grambling, and Bowie State. All of the high lights from this year's tour will be video taped and played on BET blast. The video highlights will include what happened at on other campuses on the tour. 50 years ago this week: , ^ ^ u i The New Jersey Education Association has asked the state for $1 million to assist schools ...
