'Always Watching'
BY STEPHANIE DOUTHIT

Weeks after Hurricane Ike
hit the southern Texas coast,
gas prices continued to sky
rocket as well as causing
sporadic gas shortfalls across
North Carolina.
Because gasoline delivery
disruptions occurred in
western North Carolina,
Asheville's city offices, com
munity colleges, parks, and
recreation centers temporar
ily closed.
With the average price for
gas in North Carolina $3.83,
it's been a squeeze for every
one at the pump. The serious
complications in Asheville
have not reached Winston-
Salem yet. However, as I
drive around town, I often
see covered pumps or posted
signs indicating there is no
gas at those service stations.
Where gas is available, cus
tomers may wait in line for
hours. The media have
reported people in Charlotte
were fighting after being
accused of cutting in line.
Recently I encountered
this problem when I trying
to fill up my tank. I drove
around just to find a gas sta
tion that had the type of gas
my vehicle requires. When I
found that station, I was sur
prised to read on a posted
sign: "Please limit to 10 gal
lons per person."
I was only allowed 14 gal
lons, before they cut off my
pump.
I drive a large vehicle and
getting to a gas station that
actually has gas is the impor
tant. When I cannot get a full
tank, I get frustrated.
In a recent article pub
lished in The Winston-Salem
Journal, Carol Gifford, an
AAA Carolinas spokesper
son said stations are getting
gas deliveries daily.
However, this does not seem
to alleviate the deficit.
"When they get deliveries,
it's sold out within a few
hours because there is such a
pent-up demand," she said.
I feel bad for people that
have to commute to work for
more than 20 minutes.
Prices will always change,
people will pay the price,
but something must be done
to combat the shortage.
I will not physically attack
anyone to get gas like people
in Charlotte. And I refuse to
change my lifestyle. Maybe I
will pull out my old bike
from home so I can arrive
sweaty to class daily Being
sweaty is being green right?
