WSSU celebrates 117 years

This Friday Winston-Salem
State will honor 117 years on
Founder's Day.
WSSU was founded Sept. 28,
1892 as Slater Industrial
Academy.
The events of the day will
include a tribute to the
University's founder, Simon

This year's scheduling cre
ated a "perfect storm."

It takes a lot to plan a "regu
lar" homecoming at Winston-
Salem State.
But in 2009 it has been more
challenging because WSSU,
NC Central and NC A&T all
share the same homecoming
date.
Jonathan Jackson and
Whitney McCoy were in
charge of planning Student
Government Association
events. But Jackson takes on
most of the responsibilities for
planning homecoming McCoy

"The scheduling of the three
homecomings has created the
perfect storm," said Jackson,

Green Atkins and numerous
other activities.
"It [Founder's Day] means a
lot to me," said Theodis
Chunn, Mister Winston-Salem
State University 2008-2009,
senior, mass communications
major.
"It signifies the history and
legacy of the University."
This year two individuals
will deliver the keynote
address, Archie Roberts and
Leonard Wheeler.
Roberts, a former NFL quar
terback and a retired cardiolo
gist will speak.
He is also the founder of the
nonprofit Living Heart
Foundation and co-director of
the NFL Player Care
Foundation Cardiovascular
Testing Program.
Roberts is providing free
cardiovascular health screen
ings for students and faculty
Oct. 30.
Wheeler played in the NFL
for eight years, retiring from
the Carolina Panthers in 2001.
Wheeler is an executive, per
sonal coach and motivational
speaker, and serves on the
National Steering Committee
for the NFL Players
Association, the governing
body for retired NFL players.
Founder's Day activities
begin with a wreath placing
ceremony at the Atkins statue.
Following the wreath plac
ing, the Convocation program
will take place in the K.R.
Williams Auditorium.
During the Convocation
there will be greetings from
mayor of Winston-Salem, the
WSSU Board of Trustees, the
National Alumni Association
and the Student Government
Association.

include the Mini Parade and
Pep Rally at the clock tower.

Mass Comm wins quiz bowl
The Mass Comm. Divas and a
Gentleman placed 1st in the
WSSU Quiz Bowl tournament Oct.
17. The tournament serves as a
qualifier for the national Honda
Campus All-Star Challenge. The
Extreme Programmers were 2nd
and the HP Allstars came in 3rd.
The top scorer was Candace
Kelly who averaged 40 points per
game. WSSU will be notified
spring 2010 if they have qualified.
Morehouse adopts dress code
Morehouse College recently has
banned caps, do-rags, and hoods
in indoor venues such as class
rooms and the cafeteria. The
dress code also restricts sagging
pants, grillz, bare feet, pajamas,
and cross-dressing in public or at
college-sponsored events.
Headgear considered religious or
cultural does not apply.
