Wallace named to Darden Professorship Dorothy Wallace, chairman of the Department of Business, has been named to fill the Colgate W. Darden, Jr. Professorship of Business. The Colgate W. Darden, Jr. Professorship of Business was established by the late Mr. and Mrs. W. Eldridge Smith of Franklin, Va., long-time friends of Darden, who died in 1981. The professorship recognizes Darden’s outstanding accomplishments as a statesman, scholar, politician and educational leader. Longtime Faculty Member Dean of the College Dr. B. Franklin Lowe, Jr., who made the announcement, commented: “Mrs. Wallace is certainly well qualified to be named Colgate W. Darden, Jr. Professor of Business. “In her 25 years at Chowan College, she has proved to be an outstanding teacher, and in recent years she has also proved to be a competent and efficient chairperson of the Department of Business. “She deserves this honor which was conferred by the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees.” Lowe called Darden “one of Virginia’s outstanding educational leaders and statesman of this century.” Darden delivered the commencement address at Chowan in 1971 and 1974. H© received his education at the University of Virginia, Columbia University, and Oxford University where he studied with a Carnegie Fellowship in International Law. Darden Was Statesman His service as an elected official in cludes the Virginia General Assembly, four terms in the U. S. House of Representatives, and Governor of Virginia from 1942 to 1946. He served as chancellor of the College of William and Mary from 1946-1959. Darden also served as representative of the United Nations in 1955 and member of the President’s Consultants on Foreign Intelligence and President’s Commission on National Goals. Dorothy Wallace has served as professor of business at Chowan since 1965. She was named chairman of the Department of Business in January, 1985. Educational Background She earned her B.S. in business education from Radford College and M.S. in business education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. She has done additional graduate study at the Professor’s work published Professor of English Robert G. Mulder has written byline articles appearing in two Southern Baptist Convention quarterly music publications. "It Works for Me," the first of a six part series, appears in the Oct.-Dec. 1989 issue of GLORY SONGS, easy choir music. The topic of the first article is "A Cassette Listening Party. " Mulder’s second article “Registration for Hammond Organs " is printed in the Oct.-Nov. 1989 issue of PEDALPOINT, church music and study helps for pianists and organists. Active in Local Church Mulder is minister of music at Meherrin Baptist Church, Murfreesboro. He is a regular contributor to six Sunday University of Maryland, University of Missouri (seven summers). University of South Alabama, and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. While a student at Radford and VPI, her summer work experience included clerk-stenographer for Internal Revenue Service, Washington, D. C.; secretary for Anderson Millner and Anderson and service in the claim office for Southern Railroad, both in Danville, Va. Continued on Next Page MRS. DOROTHY WALLACE PROFESSOR ROBERT MULDER School Board magazines. In addition to writing for music publications, his short stories and poems appear on a regular basis in denominational magazines. Mulder is a consultant with the Music Publication Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. A Potecasi native, he holds the B.A. and M.A. degrees from East Carolina University. He is listed in International Who's Who in Poetry and has been featured as "Citizen of the Week” in the Ahoskie News-Herald. Mulder is founder and editor of NEW EARTH PUBLICATIONS which publishes a poetry quarterly with several hundred subscribers represented by every state and six countries. He publishes Writer’s Forum, a newsletter for creative writers. Noted Author He is the author of four books of poetry to include THE SHEPHERD WHO STAYED BEHIND, a first collection of Christmas poetry published by Colerain Publications, Ltd. He also wrote BACKYARD COWBOY, a collection of poems written for his son with the proceeds donated to the Heather Nelson Memorial Fund. Other books include THE TENOR OF MY SONG and WHEN THE HEART IS BREAKING. Mulder received the Eva Berry Harris Poetry Award, sponsored by the Greenville Arts Council and the Sheer Genuis Writing Award from THE NATIONAL OBSERVER in 1978. He has served at Chowan since 1965. J^acuCty J^ocus KEN CRAIG, professor of religion, successfully defended his doctoral dissertation and will be formally awarded the Ph.D. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., in December, 1989. A paper by English professor DR. JOHN DAVIS, “Still the Same Old Story: The Refusal of Time to Go By in Casablanca," was accepted for reading at the 15th Annual Conference on Literature and Film, Florida State University Comparative Literature and Film Circle and for publication in the LITERATURE/FILM QUARTERLY. English professor SARAH DAVIS’ essay “Education; A Never Ending Search for Everyone,” was published in the Sept. 9, 1989 issue of BIBLICAL RECORDER and will be reprinted in the SOUTHERN BAPTIST EDUCATOR. Science professors JAMES DEWAR and GEORGE HAZELTON were each awarded grants from the Burroughs Wellcome Science Faculty Scholarship Program for the 1989-90 academic year. DOUG EUBANK, SUSAN FECHO and DAVID PARKER, professors of art, exhibited their works at the Chowan County Arts Council in Edenton, which ran September 15 to October 6. DOUG EUBANK conducted a “Teapots Are Hot” workshop for the Ceramic Designers Guild, Norfolk, Va., on Sept. 23, 1989. Four illustrations by SUSAN FECHO were published in the Fall, 1989, edition of ARIES ONE, a publication by Southeastern Community College, Whiteville. Her fiber sculpture “Corseted Women” was selected by the Creative Arts Guild Gallery Committee for showing at the National Fiber Arts Show in Dalton, Ga., Oct.-Nov. 15. DR. CARL GARROTT, professor of Spanish and French, has been chosen to review the manuscript for a new French textbook to be published by Harper and Row. His article, “Teacher Evaluation in Foreign Language Education: Behavior Alteration Techniques,” was published in the Aug. 15, 1989 edition of CENTER FOR APPLIED LINGUISTICS. DR. DWAINE GREENE’S review of three works on Pauline theology appeared in the journal. Perspectives in Religious Studies, summer 1989, which is published by the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion. Dr. Greene is chairman of the Department of Religion. DR. DOROTHY COMBS HILL, professor of English, spoke on “Con temporary Southern Women Writers” at the Faculty/Forum Lyceum on Sept. 21. Dr. Hill conducted master classes on Lee Smith for the cadets at VMI on Sept. 11-12. She again addressed the topic of why Southern women writers are at the forefront of contemporary fiction at the South Atlantic Language Association (SAMLA) in Atlanta in Nov. ROBERT G.
