Scholarship established; Maddreys honored at luncheon
Mrs. C. Gordon (Mabel Claire) Maddrey, from Raleigh, has established
a significant endowed scholarship at Chowan College in memory of her
parents, Charlie C. and Tulie Eugenia Hoggard.
Mrs. Maddrey, a long-time resident of Ahoskie and member of the First
Baptist Church there, was honored at a luncheon at Chowan College in
January to announce the establishment of the scholarship.
“Chowan College is very pleased to include the Charlie C. and Tulie
Eugenia Hoggard Scholarship as part of our scholarship program,” stated
President Jackson. “On behalf of the college’s Board of Trustees, I am
most honored to announce the scholarship will be awarded to a student this
year on the basis of merit and academic achievement.
At Mrs. Maddrey’s request, recipients of
the Hoggard scholarship will be students
who are either from Bertie or Hertford
County in the Roanoke-Chowan area.
Mr. Charlie C. Hoggard was a fanner
and businessman in Hertford and Bertie
Counties and was remembered at the
luncheon by his grandson, Mr. Charles
Hoggard Maddrey, a businessman now
living in Atlanta, Georgia. Maddrey
recalled his grandfather as a man who
dedicated his life to community service,
the church, hard work, and to his family.
“He served on the Ahoskie Town Coun
cil, and built the third house ever built in
Ahoskie. He was a dedicated member of
the First Baptist Church and served on the
Chowan College Board of Trustees,” said
Maddrey.
Tulie Eugenia Hoggard was remembered
by Mrs. Eugene H. Freeman as a devoted
church worker and mother. Mrs. Hoggard
was one of the first Deaconnesses elected
to the Board of Deacons of the First Baptist
Church in Ahoskie.
“Her opinion was valued and respected.
She inspired others to achieve through her
deep devotion to Baptist missions,” stated
Mrs. Freeman.
Mrs. Mabel Claire Maddrey recalled
that her mother was a student at Chowan
College, and was a teacher and a musician.
“I was most blessed by my parents. I am
delighted to give what I can to Chowan
College beause my parents thought so
much of the college,” Mrs. Maddrey
commented. “Even though I now live in
Raleigh, I am still very interested in the
Roanoke-Chowan area, and it is my desire
that this scholarship go to benefit local
students so that they may develop in
academics and leadership.’’
Other members of the. Maddrey family
who were also honored at the luncheon
were Joseph Gordon Maddrey, son of Mrs.
Maddrey and an attorney from Eden; his
