New faculty and staff join Chowan family
Dr. Charles P. Bentley
Eh-. Charles P.
Bentley has joined
the faculty of
Chowan as the
chairman of the
college’s new depart
ment of education.
He comes to Chowan
from Wilkesboro, N.C. where for the
past ten years he was director of the
Regional Education Center and member
of the State Superintendent’s Adminis
trative Team for the state of North
Carolina.
Dr. Bentley assumed responsibilities
for the department of education at
Chowan in early AugusL Education
(pre-school through middle) is one of
the four-year degrees Chowan will offer
beginning in the fall of 1992.
“In seeking to fill the position of
chairperson of the department of educa
tion, we were looking for a person with
extensive knowledge and experience in
the field,” states Dr. B. Franklin Lowe,
vice president for academic affairs at
Chowan. “We also wanted someone
who was knowledgeable of teacher
education in North Carolina, and who
could provide the special skills needed
to build and direct a quality, accredited
program. We believe we have found
such a person in Dr. Charles Bentley."
Dr. Bentley has a wide range of
experience in education including
fifteen years as associate superintendent
for instruction and personnel for the
12,000 pupil school system in Wilkes
County, N.C. He served for three years
as principal of the junior high school in
Ketnersville, N.C. and five years as a
teacher at the elementary level in
Winston-Salem, N.C. He also has ten
years of experience as adjunct professor
in curriculum and school administration
at Appalachian State University Grad
uate School.
A graduate of Mars Hill College with
the associate of arts degree, he holds the
bachelor’s degree in social studies and
English from Wake Forest University;
and the master of education from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill with a graduate teaching certificate
in social studies and school administra
tion. He also received the educational
specialist degree from UNC-Chapel
Hill. He earned the doctorate in
education in school administration from
the University of North Carolina at
Greensboro.
Dr. Bentley is a member of the
National Association of Supervision
and Curriculum Development (board of
directors 1986-87); American As
sociation of School Administrators; and
the North Carolina Association of
School Administrations (board of
directors 1986-87). He was elected
president of the North Carolina Asso
ciation of Supervision and Curriculum
Development in 1986. He served as
president of the UNC-Chapel Hill
School of Education Alumni Associa
tion for 1989-90.
Dr. Bentley and his wife, Lois are the
parents of three daughters and reside in
Murfreesboro.
Linda Marie Blincoe
Linda Marie
Blincoe has joined
the staff of Chowan
College as assistant
director of admis
sions. She will work
primarily with
Baptist churches
throughout the region and with Baptist
youth groups throughout the state.
She most recently served as ad
ministrative assistant to the president of
Southeastern Baptist Theological Semi
nary at Wake Forest, N.C. She also
served as assistant director of ad
missions at Campbellsville College in
Kentucky. She was director of con
tinuing education at Oakland City
College in Oakland, Indiana and youth
director for Powersville Baptist Church
in Kentucky.
Blincoe received the B.A. in religion
from Belmont College in Tennessee and
the Master of Religious Education from
the Southern Baptist Theological
Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky with
an emphasis in missions.
Blincoe also was a summer mis
sionary and conducted church retreats
for the Home Mission Board and
Tennessee Baptist Convention. She was
named one of the Outstanding Young
Women in America in 1988. She was
the devotional writer for the Oakland
City Journal newspaper in Oakland
City, Indiana and also for the Braken
County Newspaper in Brooksville,
Kentucky.
A member of Wake Forest Baptist
Church in Wake Forest, Blincoe will
reside in Murfreesboro.
Dr. Kichard K. Gay
The new professor
of English in the
department of
language and
literature at Chowan
is Dr. Richard R. Gay
who joined the
faculty at the
beginning of the fall semester.
Dr. Gay was awarded the doctorate in
English from the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro, received the
bachelor’s and master’s degrees in
English from the University of
Richmond in Virginia. He completed
his doctoral thesis on “The Deianeiran
Tradition in Six English Tragedies.”
His previous teaching experience
includes ten years of teaching secon
dary English in the Virginia public
schools; six semesters of teaching
English undergraduate courses at the
University of North Carolina at Greens
boro; and English lab assistant at the
University of Richmond.
Dr. Gay is the author of journal
articles, one of which recently appeared
in Notes on Mississippi Writers, entitled
“Arthurian Tragedy in Faulkner’s
Absalom, Absalom!”. He also published
a paper at the Southeastern Medieval
Association in 1990. He is a member of
the Modem Language Association, the
National Council for Teacher Education
and the Southeastern Medieval As
sociation.
His teaching specialities are in the
areas of British literature through the
18th century, rhetoric and composition,
and supervision of English education
majors. He resides in Waverly, Vir
ginia.
Edwin Dean Gilbert
Edwin Dean
Gilbert has joined the
faculty of Chowan as
chairperson of the de
partment of graphic
communications,
announced Dr. B.
Franklin Lowe, vice
president for academic affairs. Gilbert
will supervise all of the instruction,
printing and photography programs, and
production work in the Krueger School
of Graphic Communications at
Chowan.
Gilbert comes to Chowan from
Charlotte, N.C. where he was employed
with Ringier American, Inc. a graphic
arts firm specializing in electronic pre
press production. He designed a training
program for production employees and
management staff while at Ringier and
initiated training programs at printing
plants in Georgia and Illinois.
He received the bachelor of science
degree in industrial and technical
education from Appalachian State
University with a concentration in
drafting and graphic arts. He also
received the master’s degree in higher
education with a concentration in
administration from Appalachian.
Gilbert’s teaching experience
includes positions at Anson Technical
College in Ansonville, N.C. and at
Pensacola Junior College in Pensacola,
Florida, where he instructed printing
courses, served as in-plant printing
manager for the college, and taught
graphic arts courses including photo
typesetting, lay-out and design, camera,
and plate-making. At Anson Technical
College, he served as chairman of the
graphic arts department and supervised
all instructors in printing management,
commercial art, and photography
programs.
As the director of new and expanding
industries at Central Piedmont Com
munity College for six years, he
marketed North Carolina’s economic
development package in Mecklenburg
County. He is married with one son and
resides in Murfreesboro.
Herman Gatewood, former depart
ment chairman, continues at Chowan as
professor of graphic communicatations.
John D. Nesbitt
John D. Nesbitt,
from Columbia,
S.C., has joined the
staff of Chowan as
vice president for
business affairs. He
comes to Chowan
from South Carolina
where he has served as the director of
business and finance for Columbia
Bible College and Seminary since 1984.
Nesbitt holds the B.S. degree in
industrial relations (personnel manage
ment), with a minor in psychology from
the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. He received the Master of
Theology with honor from Dallas
Theological Seminary with a major in
historical theology. He has completed
continuing education at the College
Business Management Instiuite in
Lexington, Kentucky; the Institute of
Christian Organizational Management,
Barrington, Rhode Island; and the
National Institute of Christian School
Administrations, Winona Lake, Indiana;
as well as graduate courses in higher
education finance and the use of
computers and software applications in
finance at the University of South
Carolina in Columbia.
He previously held positions as chief
administrative officer for North Hills
Christian School, and in the admissions
office of Baylor University Medical
Center. He was named to the 21st and
22nd editions of Who’s Who in the
South and Southwest and was named to
Outstanding Young Men in America in
1985.
He is married with two children and
resides in Murfreesboro.

Dr. David Gowler, professor of religion and philosophy, has been selected to
write a book fw the Paulist Press entitled What Are They Saying About the
Parables of Jesus?. He is also writing a chapter on "The Development of Socio-
Rhetorical Criticism" for the book New Boundaries in Old Territory: Forms and
Social Rhetoric in Mark to be published by Fortress Press.
Dr. Ken Craig, professor of religion and philosophy, has been asked to read a
paper, "Asking for Rhetoric: Rhetorical Questions in Deuteronomic History" at the
November meeting of Southern Baptist Literature (SBL). He has also been invited
to write an article on Jonah for the Mercer Commentary on the Bible and invited to
write an article for the Biblical Illustrator entitled "Lions in the Ancient Near
East". Dr. Craig has also had several bo(* reviews published recently.
Dr. Ken Wolfskill, chairman of the department of language and literature and
Dr. John Davis, professor of English, have been selected to read papers at the
meeting of the Popular Culture Association of the South. Dr. Wolfskill will read
"A Dreadful Eye: Why Travis McGee Never Got to Television," and Dr. Davis
will read "L-Shaped Moves with a Knight Named Paladin: Atypical Archetypes in
'Have Gun Will Travel'."
Dr. Carl Garrett, professor of foreign language, is to have an article published
in Cuadernos de Artes y Ciencias in October, 1991 entitled "Le roman sun^aliste:
le roman mexicain qui oriente vers 'Tematica espiritual'".
Professor of English Robert Mulder has an article appearing in Christian
Single October issue entitled "What Your Job Can and Cannot Do For You".
The Northeast Technical Education Center in Williamston, N.C. has requested
the Chowan science faculty to provide four workshops for area teachers in
physical science, biology, chemistry, and physics. These workshops will be held
throughout the year at the education center in October, November, December and
April. Over 100 area teachers are expected to participate on each date.
