C. 27855 Telephone (919)398-4101 Alumni Oldest Living Alumna Ursula Vinson Carter is Chowan’s oldest living graduate. She was bom December 10,1889, in Murfreesboro. Mrs. Carter just turned 103. A member of the class of 1910, she is the daughter of John Hen^ and Sudie Garris Vinson. €lpon graduation, she attended Baptist Woman’s Missionary Union and Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky. She taught school for seven years in Williamston and Beaufort, N.C. She is the widow of Rev. J.F. Carter, long-time pastor of Waughtown Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She has three daughters, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is currendy a resident of Meadowbrook Manor Nursing Home in Clemmons, N.C. His wife, Mrs. Marguerite Davis, serves on the Board of Visitors. Hazel Cornelia GrifHn died recently in Roanoke Valley Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. She was 87. Griffin was a native to Northampton County. She received her B.A. from Chowan in 192(5, then went to North Carolina State University to obtain her master's. She taught in public schools in Rocky Mount, Raleigh, and Fayetteville. She taught Enghsh at Chowan College from 1949 to 1951. Interested in historical places, especially old homes, she wrote ‘The Village of Woodland-George,” a history of the town. She was a member of Woodland Baptist where she taught Sunday school.
